Observation Towers in Belgium and Beyond

Online magazine of Lithuanian children living in Brussels – Maklinėtojai – invites you to travel around Belgium and beyond Belgium’s observation decks. In Lithuania, the observation tower fever has been going on for several years. And how is it in Belgium? We wouldn’t say that visitors are crazy about the towers, but there are definitely some very beautiful and impressive observation towers here. We visited several of them, climbed them and will share our impressions.

Observation towers in Belgium (and beyond).

Vlooybergtoren (Vlooybergtoren)

Built in 2013, this tower-staircase immediately became a visitor attraction in the small municipality of Tiel-Winge in the Flemish Brabant province. Visitors nicknamed it a “stairway to heaven”, even though it is only 11 meters high and 20 m in length. By the way, it weighs not so little – it’s weight is 13 tons! Well, if anyone is wondering how much it cost, we also “found that out” – 135,000 EUR.

La Butte Baltia

Somewhat similar to an observation tower-staircase. It is located at the highest point in Belgium – the Bottranges beacon, in the Hautes Fagnes/ Hoge Venen nature reserve. The tower was built in 1923 and is only 6 years old. Why? Well, everything is simple – the highest place reaches 694 m, so this tower “rounded” the height to 700 m. It is true that the antenna tower built right next to it dates back to 718.

King Baldwin’s Tower (La Tour Roi Baudouin)

Let’s move on to “more serious” towers. King Baldwin Tower of Belgium is definitely worth a visit for several reasons. First of all – the height! Not everyone dares to climb 50 meters. Many can confirm this. While climbing, we met those who had not yet overcome their fear of heights, in the middle of the climb. Secondly, this tower is built at the intersection of three countries (Netherlands, Germany, Belgium). From the observation deck, you can see the fields of Germany, the largest plant labyrinth on the Dutch side, and the villages around Gemmenich on the Belgian side.

Middelkerk Tower (Warandetoren)

This tower on the Belgian coast will certainly not leave you indifferent and will invite you to see the sea from a height of 20 m. From it, the towns of Middelkerke and Westende, the sea, and other cities can be seen perfectly. By the way, it is interesting that the observation tower is simply “installed” on another – water – tower, which is still working and supplying water. When you climb it, you feel as if you are in a nest, and you can also feel the swaying of the tower itself.

Uitkijktoren As

This tower is located in Aso, right next to the old train station. This is one of the best places to see the landscape of the famous (UNESCO) National Park Hoge Kempen (Nationaal Park Hoge Kempen) from above. Although the tower does not look high from a distance, its observation deck is located at a height of 31 m, so you will rise high above the trees. In the site you will find maps with descriptions of visible places. In addition, disused trains and their wagons decorated with drawings can be seen from the tower in a really impressive way.

Žilepos Dam Observation Tower

We can make you happy – you won’t have to climb this tower. You will be picked up by a lift! In the parking lot surrounded by windows in 78 in the high tower, you will feel like you are in a skyscraper: you will see the impressive size dam (Lac de La Gileppe), Hertogenwald and the largest 13.50 m high, 16 m long and 5 m wide lion, the Belgian lion.

Lomel Sahara Tower

Yes, the name does not deceive you – it is the Belgian Sahara, near the town of Lommel. Having risen to 30 at the site located at a height, you will admire the impressive landscape – sand strips around the lake with poor vegetation, somewhat reminiscent of the Sahara.

Ijzer Tower

Our last tower is the special Ijzer tower-museum. This 84 m tower can be seen from the most distant surroundings. It has an excellent World War I exhibition. Going down the stairs, you also go down the timeline – 1914 at the top. the beginning of the war – below – 1918 and the end of the war. You will even have to go through the trenches (if you want). Allow at least 2 hours for this tower. Right next to it is the beautiful old town of Diksmuide (10-15 min. on foot).

Tiger & Turtle Magic Mountain

If you have already been to all the towers in Belgium, why not – here is one of the most impressive in the world – Duisburg’s magic mountain! It’s like a roller coaster ride… on foot!!! True, you will not be able to overcome the loop, no matter how much you want – the passage is blocked. However, you can climb the jagged roller coaster (220 m long). And even if you go up to the age of 13. height, but it will seem that you are much higher, because the roller coaster is installed on a steep 50 m high mountain. The roller coaster is illuminated in the dark – as many as 880 LED lights are installed.
