Zoo Parks and Animal Farms in Tenerife

“Travels with children ®” shares with you useful tips and information about places to visit with children in the Canary Islands.

Jolita, one of the founders of “Travels with Children ®”, has prepared an information guide for you in case you want to visit Zoo parks and animal farms in Tenerife.

Zoos in Tenerife

Loro Park

Founded at the end of 1972, Loro Parque was originally designed as a paradise for parrots –  25 people, 150 parrots and an area of 13,000 square meters. From that time to the present, Loro Park has become one of the most respected zoological institutions in the world, both for its beauty, its excellent facilities and its absolute respect for nature. The park is located in the north of Tenerife, in Puerto de la Cruz.

The park is really well maintained and spacious. The park has a large aquarium with an underwater tunnel and a separate penguinarium. There are many shows that are included in the price of the visit – including a sea lion and seal show, the dolphin show, the spectacular orca show, and the parrot show.

The park has a large selection of food – we like the buffet best because it gives us a variety of food for every member of the family.

Advice for Visitors

Bring water and snacks for the kids, hats and sunscreen. Be sure to arrive as early as possible or right at the opening of the zoo – you will find activities for the whole day, keep an eye on the show times, there are usually two shows a day. Do not sit near the pool during the orcas show, the places are marked with “splash zone” stickers, unless you really want to get soaked. Our kids take their bathing suits for the purpose, walk as close as possible, and then change.

Prices and Where to Buy Tickets

Loro Parque ticket prices start from 40 eur for adults, from 28 eur for children (from 6 to 11 years old), free for children up to 5 years old!

Tickets at the best price can be found here, and if you plan to visit Siam Park as well, buy a TWIN ticket!

Las Aguilas Jungle Park

Las Aguilas Jungle Park is a zoological and botanical park in the south of Tenerife. The park consists of 7.5 hectares of jungle with more than 500 animals, the park has several hiking trails with tunnels, suspension bridges, waterfalls, lagoons and caves. The park also boasts daily bird flight shows featuring exotic and predatory birds.

Bird and sea lion and seal shows are included in the price of the visit. In the park there is a small and easily passable karst park, a summer sledding run. You can enter several cages and be close to the animals, who are usually extremely friendly and curious.

Advice

Bring water and snacks for the kids, hats and sunscreen. Be sure to check the timing of the bird show – it’s definitely worth a look. If it is very windy, the show will not take place. Birds are released to fly directly above your heads, the show is quite long, so sit in the shade.

There are several cafes and rest areas.

Prices and Where to Buy Tickets

Prices start from 28 euro for adults, from 20 euro for children that are from 5 to 10 years old, from 11 euro for children that are from 3 to 4 years old, children under 3 years old are free to enter.

Monkey Park

In the monkey park, you can observe animals in their natural environment. It is the only zoo in the Canary Islands that specializes in monkeys and is unique in that visitors can enter the cages and touch and feed the animals. In addition to primates such as lemurs, chimpanzees and many other species, the zoo also has a serpentarium and a collection of exotic birds, including macaws, cockatoos, and toucans. It has a pond with crocodiles and turtles.

The park is located in southern Tenerife, Arona, near the resort of Los Cristianos.

Children especially like the ability to touch and feed the animals. In cages where you can enter you will find lemurs, guinea pigs, monkeys, giant tortoises and even iguanas. The price is really very attractive – the park is not big, but it is difficult to distract children from the animals, especially if they are friendly. You can buy food for animals at the ticket office together with the ticket (the price of food is 3 euros).

Advice

Visit the zoo in the first half of the day, because that’s when the animals are most active, willing to come and enjoy food. In the afternoon they go to bed and are not interested in food at all. As always, bring sunscreen, water and hats with you.

The visit costs 10 euros for adults and children over 12 years of age, and 5 euros for children under 12 years of age. Admission is free for children up to 5 years of age. The website and tickets can be found here.

Finca El Carretón is an agro-ecological, recreational and educational space surrounded by fruit plants, large trees and the most extensive and diverse display of native Canarian animals in the entire region. The farm is located above the town of Candelaria, near the capital.

It’s certainly a great way to introduce the little ones to the Canary trees (avocados, mangoes), and to show the local domestic animals to your kids. Birds, black piglets, goats run freely and are willing to be petted. You can also buy food for them at the checkout. There is also a restaurant nearby.

Horse riding – Centro hipico del sur

This is an Equestrian center in the south of Tenerife in the town of Buzanada. Since the beginning of its activities, it has focused on popularizing this sport on the island, targeting both tourists and residents.

On the website of the center you will find contacts and information about the services provided. You can ride horses in the center. There is a cafe on the premises. We advise that it is better to make arrangements for riding in advance, because it may not be organized at the time of your arrival.

There are other places that organize horse riding – we have heard good reviews about them as well. One of them is Finca de Caldera, and horse riders will like horse riding adventures. There also is a restaurant Xanadu hippie with a hippodrome – there you can also ride horses.
