Family weekend getaway in Kaunas

Kaunas with children is a great choice for anyone who wants to have fun and interesting time. There are plenty of activities for children that adults will enjoy too. And most importantly, there are plenty of free things to do with children in Kaunas. It’s great to see that there are lots of outdoor and fresh air activities for children in the city. So here’s an idea for a family weekend getaway in Kaunas.

First of all, go to the VDU Botanical Garden to admire the great tulip bloom and take the most beautiful photos. Then go on a search for the elf village in the garden with your children, And later, when the evening cools down, head to the Girstutis swimming pool or Curiocity Educational Amusement Park for fun.

The Great Tulip Blossom at VDU Botanical Garden

Tulips in the Botanical Garden

Although the weather is not exactly warm yet, the VDU Botanical Garden’s big tulip bloom is ready for a real explosion of colour. In the third week of April, Darwin hybrids, Foster tulips, full-sized tulips, Triumph tulips, and even the usual late bloomers such as lily of the valley tulips, parakeet tulips and Coronet tulips began to bloom massively. This year, the VDU Botanical Garden in Kaunas is exhibiting about 450 tulip varieties from all 16 groups in its collection. And visitors come from even the remotest corners of Lithuania to see them and get acquainted with the rare, interesting and unseen tulips.

The collection is enriched with new additions

The VDU Botanical Garden’s tulip exposition features not only tulips, but also other spring plants. From daisies and iris to erythronium and garlic. The latter collection has also been enriched this year with new varieties. However, their flowers will have to wait for a while.

People come here to see the biggest variety of tulips in Lithuania. It’s a chance to see all the tulip groups in one place and observe their flowering times and combinations. And finally to choose your favourite, that can perhaps be planted in your flowerbeds next year. So it takes a lot of searching and turning of heads to find something new, interesting and maybe even rarer to delight your visitors in spring.

However, this year we will have at least a few new varieties that have never been exhibited in our garden, or that have long disappeared. In fact, most of them are not in bloom at the moment, and we hope to see their flowers in the next couple of weeks: In the next few weeks, we will be seeing the full-sized late tulip ‘Uncle Tom’, ‘Burgundy Lace’, ‘Lambada’, ‘Coldplay’, ‘Burning Flame’, lily of the valley ‘Burgundy’, ‘Go Go Red’, ‘Rimini’, ‘Triumph’, ‘Anastasia Romanova’, ‘Karate’, ‘One Direction’ and the Darwin hybrid ‘Robbedoes'” says R. Marselienė.

Visitors are invited to see the newly acquired tulip varieties not only in the usual exhibition place, the Educational Garden, but also in the newly created White Flower Garden by the pond in front of the conservatory, where white-flowering tulip varieties are planted.

After seeing the wonderful collection of tulips and flowers, take your children on a search for elf houses and have fun in the park’s playground.

A new place in Kaunas: the elf village

The VDU Botanical Garden is creating an elf village. Each of the carefully furnished Uncle Ged’s Elf Houses is unique, with its own story and inhabitants. We guarantee that children will have a great time searching for these houses throughout the park.

However, visitors probably won’t see these inhabitants, as the little elves and their Lithuanian cousins, goblins, are very good at hiding. However, the inscriptions above the tiny doors will tell the story of the resident and let the tales unfold. Five houses can now be found, inhabited by Majus the Elf, Marčius the Elf, Šmikis the goblin, Laimutis the goblin and Ben the Elf. Five more houses, one after the other, will soon be popping up near the playground.

These small houses are made of various wooden parts, string, buttons, metal parts, ice-cream sticks, nails and different colours. A few of the little forest dwellers – the workers – even have shovels by the door.

Educational activities are also planned to take place in “Uncle Ged’s Elf” Village.

Girstutis swimming pool

After some fun in the fresh air, we highly recommend visiting the Girstutis swimming pool. Girstutis is for us the best swimming pool with children in Kaunas. Girstutis Pool is proud to be one of the largest and most modern sports complexes in Lithuania. The centre has 3 swimming pools: 50 m, 25 m and a leisure pool, a slide and 4 jacuzzis.

Although not really suitable for children, there are Turkish, aromatherapy, infrared and hot dry air saunas for parents. There are also massage rooms. And on weekends, there is a trampoline obstacle course.

CurioCity Educational Entertainment Center

And if you’re not into water activities, we highly recommend visiting CurioCity with your children. This is our favourite entertainment centre in Kaunas with children and we always visit it when we are in the city. Curiocity is the only educational entertainment centre of its kind in the Baltic States, and it consists of 13 different spaces, which give the impression of an interactive multifunctional city. There are plenty of activities for toddlers and older children alike. On this visit, we were simply amazed by the educational activities.
