In the corner of the public square of the municipality of Santiago del Teide, in the northwest of the island, is the tourist information office of the historic city. During the almond blossom season, the Santiago del Teide Tourist Center is open from Monday to Sunday and provides detailed information on all the routes that start in Santiago, as well as the various related events.

In Santiago del Teide, in the main square near the church, there will be events dedicated to the almond blossom festival on weekends, and there will be a market.

It should be borne in mind that not all almond trees bloom at the same time, that weather conditions such as wind can cause trees to lose their leaves and blossoms in some areas, and that they may be damaged by pests. Therefore, it is always recommended to visit the Tourist Information Center and the friendly office staff always provide the most up-to-date information.

The Almond Tree and Fruits

The almond tree, which grows to a height of 3-5 meters, is easy to find when you arrive in the city of Santiago del Teide. The slender branches of the almond trees grow characteristic flowers with five petals, which will be harvested after about eight months.

The rich fruit of the Canary Islands – almonds – is used in Canarian gastronomy, mainly in the preparation of delicious traditional desserts, including bienmesabe – a rather sweet dessert (recommended for those with a sweet tooth) made from almonds, sugar, egg and lemon.

At this time of the year, it is especially recommended to take a walk around the city of Santiago del Teide and taste the delicious dishes of the Canarian region in one of the restaurants located in the center of the municipality. The almond festival is taken very seriously, and bars and restaurants in Santiago offer almond specials for several weeks.

It is best to drive along La Placeta street (behind the church) until you find the trailhead to the start of Chinyero (there is a small children’s playground here that serves as a landmark). By the way, if you decide not to hike anywhere, you will definitely find more than one almond tree here and you will take wonderful selfies and photos while the children play on the playground.

Volcanos and More

On the left, the PR TF-43.3 road leads to the Chinyero volcano, and the PR-TF 65 road leads to the Arguayo area. These are the two options you can choose from if you want to see the almond trees and admire one of the most impressive and important volcanic landscapes in Tenerife.

Chinyero’s name is important because this volcano was the site of the last volcanic eruption in Tenerife (1909). As you head towards Chinyero, you will come close to the island’s newest volcanic rocks. That day the ground began to shake and for 10 days the volcano continuously poured lava, which reached the area that is today called Calvario de los Baldíos.

It doesn’t take much effort to reach Chinyero, but the trail is quite long. Therefore, we recommend that you take it with older children who are used to hiking. This trail is approximately 8 km long and can be completed in approximately 3.5-4 hours of walking. It is rated as a moderately difficult trail.

I and my children recommend the shortest route, about 2 km long. Go to the El Calvario area and back. The walk is quite pleasant and easy. However, the path is quite rocky, so it is necessary to wear comfortable closed shoes and take a jacket against the wind. And hiking with children is always more fun if you have snacks ready for a mini picnic.
