The Canary Islands are a great choice for winter holidays and beyond, with a warm climate all year round, relatively few rainy days and plenty of activities for everyone. So, what is the weather and water temperature in Tenerife? This is one of the most frequently asked questions.

What are the weather and water temperatures in Tenerife?

Tenerife’s weather and water temperatures change depending on the season. It should also be remembered that Tenerife is unique in that you can find both “summer” with swimming by the ocean in the south of the island and “winter” with snow in Teide National Park.

The southern part of Tenerife is generally warmer and drier than the north.

What is the weather and water temperature like in Tenerife in the spring months?

In spring (March, April and May) the weather in Tenerife is mild and pleasant. In March, the average daytime temperature is usually around +20°C, while in April and May it can rise to around +22°C to +24°C. The nights remain cooler, but still pleasant. Precipitation is low in spring.

In spring, the water temperature is slightly cooler than in summer, but still warm enough for bathing, especially in May.

What are the weather and water temperatures like in Tenerife in the summer months?

Tenerife enjoys warm, low-humidity weather during the summer months (June, July and August). The average air temperature during this period is around +26°C to +29°C. In recent years, summers have been extremely hot, with temperatures reaching up to +45°C.

Water temperatures are around +21°C to +26°C.

What are the weather and water temperatures like in Tenerife during the autumn months?

In autumn (September, October, November) the air temperature in Tenerife drops slightly, but the weather remains pleasant as it doesn’t get cold so quickly after summer. The average daytime temperature at this time is around +23°C to +28°C. Although the number of rainy days increases slightly, rain is very rare.

The ocean water stays warm after the summer, around +22°C, so the swimming season continues.

What is the weather and water temperature like in Tenerife during the winter months?

During the winter months (December, January, February), Tenerife’s weather remains warm, although rainfall increases, especially in the north of the island. The average temperature during this period is around +20°C, but in the south of Tenerife it is rare for a day to be below +23-25°C, and in recent winters the temperature often rises to +29-30°C.

The water temperature cools down a little, to around +19-20°C, but many holidaymakers still enjoy the beach.

Sandstorms -kalima- are more common in winter.

What are the weather and water temperatures like on the other major Canary Islands?

Gran Canaria has similar weather to Tenerife. Daytime temperatures range from 19°C to 26°C in winter (January to December) and 18°C to 24°C at night. Water temperatures range from 19°C to 23°C throughout the year.

In Fuerteventura, daytime temperatures are slightly cooler and it is windier in winter. Evenings and nights are also much cooler. We prefer to visit Fuerteventura in summer.

In Lanzarote, the daytime temperatures are similar to those of the other islands, slightly lower than in Gran Canaria and Tenerife.
