Panemune Castle

This castle stands on a hill on the right bank of the Nemunas and its construction was started as early as 1604. Raudone Castle and Park

If your kids are Harry Potter fans, the next must-see on the list should be this castle. What does it has to do with this character, you ask? Interesting fact – such an authentic castle decorated with towers once housed a school. Isn’t it an interesting story for children? The castle looks very authentic, and its park is of extraordinary beauty. Here you can see a second-century chestnut tree, the diameter of two large men, the old red linden tree and the black poplar. Although the castle itself was accompanied by fires and frequent changes of owners, its beauty has adorned the town of Raudone for more than 400 years. And the most fun part for the family is to climb the 33.5 m high castle tower. Upon reaching the top, magical views open up, covering the smallest bends of the Nemunas, majestic mounds and avenues of trees.

What better way to get into the historical environment of the area with children than by riding like nobles through the avenues of the castle park. This will help make Raudone Castle a “fun train” as it will transport not only children, but also parents.

The Serėdžius Mound

When the imagination is full of images of perfectly preserved castles, you can also visit the mounds. Only 300 steps and you are already in one of the most interesting objects – the Serėdžius Mound. Although the castle is gone, this does not prevent children from telling the legend of this area. The legend about the Roman noble Palemon with his family and 500 nobles who fled here even from Rome! Fascinated by magical views, the nobles of Rome built their castle here in Lithuania in the most beautiful place! This mound is not only a great time with the family in nature, but also a way to tell legends, which take on a completely different tone and feeling when visiting the place.

Kartupėnai Mound

Another breathtaking mound stands right next to the Jurbarkas-Kaunas road. It is located on the highland cape, on the right banks of the Nemunas and the left banks of the Kartupis stream. It is surrounded by the Kartupis stream from the west and north, and the Nemunas valley from the south. The slopes of the mound are steep, 20 m. height. It is believed that the first castle that was attacked by the Teutonic Knights stood here. When the views on the climb take away the promise, the thought of the castle standing, the crusaders attacking on the steep slopes and the hillforts of our ancestors defending themselves, is simply breathtaking. Wouldn’t you like to tell your children such true and vivid stories?

Panemunias Regional Park Visitor Center

After castles, castles and breathtaking views, you can find respite at the visitor center. In this center, you will learn more about the nature, culture and traditional businesses of Panemune residents. You will also get to know the plants and animals of the Nemunas and its valley, and listen to their voices. Another interesting fact is that only here you can see a unique exhibit – the only surviving 18th-century buildings in Lithuania.

Šilinė Botanical Reserve

We love spending time in nature with our children. Therefore, if you, like us, can never get enough of being outdoors, this reserve is another place where you can take a walk and get to know nature up close. It is located in the Džuolyna forest, which is very close to the visitors’ center of the Panemunės Regional Park. The entire trail is marked with nine stands on the educational trail, where you will find a lot of interesting information about rare plants and animals, medicinal and edible plants found in the botanical reserve.

The Smalininkai Museum of Ancient Techniques

If you have little tech lovers in your home, be sure to visit this private museum located in the home of Justinas Stonys, a resident of Smalininkai. The museum exhibits antique engines, agricultural machinery, antique metal, wood, and linen processing equipment, cameras, printing and calculating machines, clocks, antique literature, antique trucks and cars, and a large collection of books and newspapers from various periods. But we warn you, parents may like this object the most!

The Viešvilė Fish Pond

When planning the route, we recommend including Viešvilės town in the route. It’s a small town that’s very much cherished by the local community, so you’ll find interesting local artworks adorning the town, making it a nice place to stroll and take a break from the journey. But the place I liked the most with children is the Stream Fish Walk – it helps to restore fish stocks in the stream and at the same time opens up a wonderful valley for dreamy walks. And on a hot summer day, you can even cool off in the fish pond, so the little ones will really like it here.

Alpaca Farms

All traveling families with children know that pets leave the greatest impression on children. Therefore, if you have run out of impressions, you can visit Skirsnemunė, Jurbarkas district to visit alpacas or another farm near Seredžius called “the colors of Alpacas.” Here you can learn more about alpacas, pet them, and even buy things made out of alpaca wool – blankets and such.

In both farms, it is necessary to arrange a visit in advance.
