Autumn is a great time to spend time getting to know the regions of Lithuania. Some of them have so many interesting and unexpected activities and educations that it is hard to believe. Therefore, today we are traveling around Jurbarkas.
The most interesting education for the family in the Jurbarkas district – what to do and see in Jurbarkas district with children?
Honey Tasting at the Campsite “Medaus Slėnis” in Šilinė
This is an object with a very “sweet” name and the education in it. This is the “Honey Valley” campsite and honey tasting is held there. After all, Lithuanians have been using honey for a long time as a medicine that protects against diseases and helps not to get sick, so we suggest not to miss Šilinė, where you can find this education and camping.
Ovidijus Jasinskas, the owner of “Medaus slėnis”, not only manages the campsite, which attracts many tourists, but also offers a very sweet education – honey tasting. Briefly about the education: educational programs are organized for groups of schoolchildren and adults of various ages. During them, surrounded by nature, the beekeeper talks in detail about beekeeping, the life of bees and bee products. During the education, he tells you about the different types of honey, it is suggested to taste different types of honey and feel the differences in taste, smell and color. Another bee product – bee bread – is also seen. The health benefits of bee pitch are told. Guests of the tasting are treated to hot herbal tea and honey cake called gingerbread.
Appreciate the hard work of the bees and come to this corner of paradise not only to try education, but also to have your own cabin on wheels, and if you don’t have one, the owner of the campsite has already prepared cozy cabins surrounded by the wonderful nature of the Jurbarkas region.
The Alpacas of Nemunas
Here you can get acquainted with animals from South America – alpacas. These “furry” animals are famous for their exceptional wool. If you drive along the “Paradise Road” of the Jurbarkas district and arrive at Skirsnemunė, you can see these unusual animals while in the car.
The traditionally named farm “The Alpacas of Nemunas” has been operating in Skirsnemunė since 2013. The owners of the farm invite you to visit the alpacas, learn about their cultivation and wool. At the farm, you can also see how wool is combed and spun with an ancient spinning wheel, and if possible, even purchase alpaca wool yarn, knitting or blankets. Get to know these wonderful animals and their woolen products up close!
The Underground “Presidency” of Lithuania in the Šimkaičiai Forest
The participants of the hike, accompanied by a guide, visit the former partisan bunkers and fields in the Šimkaičiai forest in Jurbarkas district. We listen to the story of the legendary journey of the Southern Lithuanian partisan commanders Adolfas Ramanauskas-Vanagas and Aleksandras Grybinas-Faustas to 1949, which lasted several months. The participants of the march will also visit the place where authentic partisan documents were found. Participants will get to know the reconstructed bunker of the fourth President of Lithuania, Jonas Žemaitis-Vytautas. At the end of the excursion, the participants perform creative tasks at the “Giliuko” recreation area.

“Today in the Then Castle” In Panemune Castle
The pride of the Jurbarkas region – the Panemune Castle – is one of the most attractive objects for tourists. The Panemune Castle is rich not only in landscape, but also in the beauty of the castle’s exterior and interior.
Therefore, if you want to feel those times, go to Panemune Castle, where you can visit an excursion with the play “Today in the Castle Then”. During the tour, participants can enjoy images from real life in the castle, for example: how the owners of the castle lived and the people who served them, how they communicated, what they ate, what they wore, what made them happy or sad, what they called delias, klepkas or latrines – to these and similar questions will be answered by the play of the castle that complements the tour.
“Siesta Under the Red Linden Trees”
The Raudone Castle is surrounded by legends, from which educations are conducted here in the castle courtyard. Here you can choose the education conducted by Elena Elzbergienė called “Siesta under the red trees”. During the education, you will hear how the Portuguese Jose de Faria de Castro’s extraordinary love for Sofia Vaksel forever connected Madeira and Red. How their love is still protected by the park’s alleys, ponds, legends… You will learn more about the reason for the siesta, you will hear the history of the castle, you will taste a special cake baked by the estate’s “gaspadinė” Juzefa, you will refresh yourself with Žože and Sofia’s love tea and you will hear extraordinary legends and events about ghosts and more. When the weather is good, we suggest you come to Raudone and try this education full of interesting stories.
The stories include the Panemunias regional park visitor center education “Old crafts of the Nemunas”, “Unnoticeable forest differences”, “Blooming forest plants”, “Mushroom world”, “Do you recognize the trees of Lithuania?”, “Discover the peculiarities of life near the Nemunas”, and “One – Lithuania – five different worlds” (in Šilinė.)
This visitor center is interesting not only because it is located in an unusual building – a former tavern in Šilinė, but it also has, probably the most, educational programs that present the nature of this region, which help everyone get to know nature and leave both young and old alike indifferent. Only in this visitor center will you get to know the plants and animals of the Nemunas and its valley, and listen to their voices.

Viesville: from civilization to the wild
Nestled between the large Karšuva forest and the Nemunas, the town of Viešvilė was at once inhabited by man for a long time. At the same time it was a secluded place with nearby natural resources. The stream of Viešvilė flowing out of the forest marshes has preserved its wild beauty. That’s why it was not for nothing that it entered the nature reserve. In Viešvilė and its surroundings, you can see how people are repairing the wrongs done to nature today.
Here you can see one of the first and one of the most beautiful walkways for fish in Lithuania through the dam. You will see how nature rapidly changes from a cultured town environment. It changes to a forest almost untouched by human activity. In just a few minutes, you will be able to move from the beech forests typical of Western Europe to the taiga-type conifer forest.
