The largest castle in the world

The largest castle in the world, Malbork (or Marienburg), is located quite close to Lithuania, in Poland. Situated near Gdansk and the Polish seaside, Malbork Castle is a massive Gothic fortress that has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. This castle is a must-visit with children to introduce them to history and showcase some of the most impressive architectural monuments. We visited Malbork Castle with our children a long time ago while traveling to the Polish seaside and Gdansk, and we share our tips.

The largest castle in the world – history

The largest castle in the world is very close to Lithuania, so it is easily accessible by car. Malbork Castle or Marienburg Castle is from the 13th century, the castle of the Teutonic Order was built in Malbork by the river Nogat, the area of the entire territory is more than 21 ha.

1309-1454 the castle was the residence of the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, and in 1457-1772 with short breaks of Royal Prussia, a province of the Kingdom of Poland, and one of the residences of the Polish kings. After the divisions of Poland in 1772 the castle belonged to the Kingdom of Prussia, but after the World War II, it was returned to Poland. The castle was heavily damaged during World War II, but it was later rebuilt and restored. Today, the castle functions as a museum and is the largest brick castle in Europe by area.

Malbork is one of the largest and best-preserved examples of medieval defensive and residential architecture in Central and Eastern Europe, one of the most monumental and impressive brick Gothic ensembles in Europe. in 1997 Marienburg Castle is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Visiting the castle and tickets

Malbork Castle is a very popular tourist attraction in Poland, so it is very crowded during the season. Tickets can be purchased on site or online, during the high season we sincerely recommend doing so online, as only 500 people can visit the castle at one time. It is very important to choose what you want to visit because there are different types of tickets available (Historical Castle Road, Castle Monastery Road, Castle Ground Area Road). You can also choose an independent visit of the castle with an audio guide. Also guided tours. There are plenty of options, so it’s important to select the one that suits you best.

We chose the route of the Castle’s ground areas with an audio guide. By the way, you can choose the audio guide even in LITHUANIA. Motiejus liked it very much, it was extremely interesting. He said it was the most interesting excursion he had ever been on. But in fact, it was interesting not only to Motiejus, but also to us. The narration is captivating and not boring at all. This excursion lasted about 2 hours, and we also walked around the castle and took pictures. Therefore, we sincerely recommend that you spend at least half a day visiting the castle.

There are plenty of parking lots around Malbork Castle. We recommend leaving your car there, as the price will be lower than city parking. It’s very convenient to leave your car on the other side of the river and walk across the pedestrian bridge to the castle.

Our recommendations

We sincerely recommend visiting this place if you’re traveling with children to the Polish seaside or Gdansk. The castle is truly impressive. If anyone asks us what to visit on the way to Gdansk, our answer is always Malbork Castle.

Plan to spend at least half a day visiting the castle, as the area and the entire complex are massive. There are plenty of cafes and snack bars nearby. The town is really busy.

It’s convenient to travel from Gdansk by train, and tickets can be purchased in advance. You can also book private tours from Gdansk, which is a very comfortable option, especially when traveling with children.

The castle isn’t very stroller-friendly. There are many stairs and cobblestone surfaces, so be prepared to carry and lift the stroller when needed.
