The City of Panevėžys with Children

Vilanda, a mother traveling with children, decided to explore her hometown and discover its secrets with her children. Vilanda shares her impressions from a day full of excitement, after which the memories remained in the children’s memory for a long time.

The city of Panevėžys with children. What to see and visit with children? TOP6 places in Panevėžys with children.

Freedom Square and the historical part of the city

We started our journey in the very center of the city – Freedom Square. This square is the main place in the city center of Panevėžys, where the main events of the city take place, small shops, cafes, the city municipality and the Panevėžys development agency are located, where you will find all the necessary information about the sights of Panevėžys and where you can buy souvenirs. Very recently, the Panevėžys Freedom Square was renovated and acquired a new, charming face. Renovated pedestrian-bicycle paths, equipped terraces, benches, rest areas, chess tables, fountain, other interesting elements. There is also a children’s playground that fits perfectly into the general view of the square, which the children really liked. Simple playground elements, but thanks to children’s imagination, they become interesting. Especially the roller coaster and the playing bubble.

About the Field

After playing on the field, we traveled around the field and looked around. How many interesting details are revealed by the shelters of buildings. Laisvė Square belongs to the historical part of the city, so the buildings here remind of old history. Next we went to Klaipėda, A. Smetona, Š. On the streets of the Mayor, Respublika, T. Moigios, Vasario 16. We were looking for old red brick houses, various architectural elements. In the city you will also find many sculptures and monuments: J. Miltinis, HK Andersen, Don Quixote, and others. Try to find where they are hiding. The beautiful and well-kept streets revealed the secrets of the old city.

It is really worth taking a walk through the small streets of the artistic city, visiting the courtyards, finding new details you have never seen before, getting to know a city you have never seen before, and uncovering the secrets of decades-old buildings.

Puppet Theater

A puppet theater unique not only in Lithuania, but also in Europe. In the summer, this theater travels around the villages and towns of Lithuania, and in the cold season, it invites small audiences to its house. We fell in love with this theater a few years ago. Although the performance is still sometimes insurmountable until the end, the emotion and joy of coming here is endless. Performances are intended for children of all ages. The performances feature actors and puppets. After the performance, a puppet theater appears at home and the toys at home become actors.

When preparing for a trip to Panevėžys, be sure to check out the theater repertoire and include it in your itinerary.

Culture and Recreation Park

After walking around the sights of the city, we are looking for a place to rest. Nestled between industrial and residential areas, the Culture and Recreation Park is a popular leisure spot for locals. Here, families who love active recreation will find disc golf, sports and children’s playgrounds. There are several children’s playgrounds scattered in different parts of the park. They are suitable for both children and adults.

New cycling and walking paths run throughout the park. There are picnic areas with barbecues. A great place to plan a family lunch in nature.

The paths of the park lead along the coast of Nevėžis and the park, there are viewing terraces. After climbing the bridge, a great panorama opens up. The park has neat public toilets adapted for the disabled.

There is a cozy cafe in the park, where delicious coffee is brewed and delicious yarrow is baked. Here you can relax and have a snack. The cafe is small, there is no separate area for children, but you can find coloring books. Children have more fun on the outdoor terrace.

Screen Lagoon Coast

The well-maintained coast of the “Screen” lagoon has already become an attraction for spending free time, and we are no exception. We love this place and find things to do in all seasons. A 5 km long pedestrian-bicycle path winds along the shore of the lagoon. Next to sports and picnic areas. There are swimming pools, outdoor games, outdoor musical instruments.

The trail is fun to travel on foot or with scooters or rollerblades, the smooth surface is perfect for this. In the warm season, there is a water ski park, and water bikes are available for rent. There is also an opportunity to admire the lagoon on a pleasure boat. The trail is great, but there is a problem with toilets, there is only one on the entire trail.

School of Nature

The nature school is located on the outskirts of the city. A large and green area, a magnificent wooden villa and the most fun thing for children – the animals that live here. My children’s number one object. Nature school, like a mini zoo with various educational and environmental spaces. Here, a close relationship, harmony with nature is fostered, and love and care for it is inculcated.

Arrival Near the Nature

We arrived already in the afternoon and were the only visitors at that time, so we boldly explored every corner, greeted the local residents of the nature school. We were greeted by a wonderful guide, Daiva, who led an interesting tour and introduced us to the entire history, idea and ongoing activities of the nature school. We traveled through the school grounds, through the squares and various spaces.

The nature school building itself is unique, included in the cultural heritage lists, built in 1934. Currently restored and adapted for activities. The guide, who talks sincerely and interestingly, found a common language with the children, and together with them playfully explored the environment of the nature school. Various birds live in the nature school: chickens, geese, pheasants, woodpeckers and others. There is also a black and large bird – a crane, which you can try to talk to and get the answer “hello” or “here”, if the crane is in a mood, you can try to start a conversation. Rabbits, goats, ponies and a donkey will delight children. Small animals live in the petting zoo: rodents, parrots, basking turtles and iguanas, and other reptiles. Here you can get to know them more closely, pet them, watch what they do.

It is fun not only for children, but also for adults, so our acquaintance with the nature school was truly memorable.

Aukštaitija’s Narrow Gauge Railway

We can probably safely call Panevėžys a city by the narrow gauge railway. Since 1899 the rolling train only pleases tourists. The old narrow-gauge train no longer carries freight or passengers. In the warm season of the year you can reach Raguvėliai, Surdegiai or Anykščiai by train, while at other times of the year the steam train and the old sauruko station are open to visitors. Everything related to trains is interesting for children, and this object was no exception.

Arrival Near the Railway

Upon arrival, we were greeted by brightly colored narrow wagons, neatly lined up in the area and waiting for the start of the new season. Of course, we have heard the question “Can I ride the train?” more than once and more than twice. The children’s curiosity was satisfied by letting them get into the wagon, inspect the steam locomotive and sit behind the driver’s wheel. The area is full of old vehicles, which commemorate various periods of the narrow’s history. Large red brickwork – the depot of the saurus, where various repair works of the saurus take place to this day, authentic work tools and machine tools have been preserved and used. Children are interested, but caution should be exercised.

The fun part is a ride on an old railway vehicle – a hand train. Children’s eyes are big and their smiles are wide. The impression remained for a few days ahead. After taking the train, we travel to the narrow stop, where we saw the station master’s house and its interior.

Nearby, there is a shed for historical rolling stock and rolling stock on display: a road grader, a wooden freight wagon, a tank, a platform, a snow blower, and an ice cream parlor wagon. We couldn’t resist the temptation to climb on the pedestrian bridge and survey the area from above. Not only narrow-gauge, but also broad-gauge trains pass through the city of Panevėžys. We got lucky and saw a freight train leaving. After leaving the trains, we finished our acquaintance with the narrow road.
