Punta de Teno lighthouse in Tenerife

Travel 4 kids ® shares with you useful tips and information on places to visit with children in the Canary Islands. If you’re travelling in Tenerife, you can find attractions on the Tenerife Attractions Map from Travel 4 Kids®.

Jolita from Travel 4 kids ® shares tips and information on whether the Punta de Teno lighthouse in Tenerife is open to visitors and how to get there easily and safely.

Punto de Teno lighthouse in Tenerife

The Punta de Teno Lighthouse is a wonderful place to see where the sun goes down and travel to Tenerife’s “edge of the world”. Personally, it reminds me of Icelandic scenery, which only adds to the impression.

Punta de Teno is one of the least known corners of Tenerife, which only adds to the charm of this secluded place. It is the westernmost point of Tenerife and is home to a postcard-perfect lighthouse. Simply magical!

The park has been isolated from the rest of the island for centuries, due to its difficult accessibility on foot and by road. The inhabitants of this remote place had to travel four hours by narrow path to the nearest town, Buenavista del Norte. However, this isolation has allowed the landscape of Punta de Teno to remain untouched throughout Tenerife’s history. Vertical cliffs, laurel forests and volcanic rocks coexist in the same space, creating a unique island environment.

From the small bay of Punta de Teno, you can see the cliffs of Los Gigantes and the panorama of La Gomera.

The Punta de Teno Lighthouse is one of the seven lighthouses on the island and was built in 1897. It was formerly under the care of two keepers who maintained and managed the lighthouse and lived there with their families. Today the lighthouse operates automatically.

Punta de Teno Lighthouse in Tenerife – how to get there?

Getting by bus from Buenavista del Norte

Punta de Teno has been a protected area for several years and traffic is regulated. For this reason, the only way to get to Punta de Teno in autumn, winter and spring from 10am to 7pm and in summer from 9am to 8pm is to take bus number 369, which departs hourly from Buenavista del Norte bus station. The bus ticket costs EUR 2 return. The journey from the bus stop to Punta de Teno takes about 20 minutes and the road is really narrow and spectacular.

Walking tour from the village of Teno

To walk to Punta de Teno, drive to Teno Alto (780 m), a small village in the Teno mountains. From this small village, a hiking trail descends all the way to Punta de Teno and back. Route. However, this is a strenuous hike and is not suitable for children and is not feasible for every adult.

Punta de Teno Lighthouse in Tenerife – our impressions from the bus trip

We have just tried it with Greta and Oscar and we share our impressions and tips with you. We travelled at the beginning of summer, in June.

Our tips and recommendations:

  • We found the station easily and parked our car for free on the street.
  • For bus departure times, see the TITSA page. The bus departs quite punctually, so arrive early.  The bus also stops in town, on the way and at the lighthouse (at the beginning of the road to the lighthouse). But it’s more convenient to park and get a seat on the bus when leaving the station.
  • You can pay either by card or cash on the bus.
  • The journey takes just 20 minutes.
  • Bring your swimming costume and towels if you want to take a dip and relax in a remote part of Tenerife. Bring water shoes if you have them.
  • Bring sun cream and hats.
  • You will also need a windbreaker as it can be windy in the winter months.
  • Bring plenty of water and if you plan to stay longer a snack – there are no supermarkets or restaurants here.
  • You can also take SUP boards and kayaks for family fun.
  • The lighthouse itself is not working and cannot be accessed.
  • Take a walk, have a picnic, have a swim, have fun.
  • You don’t have to take the next bus back (just save your tickets) and you can stay as long as you like, the important thing is to take the last bus.

Our children particularly enjoyed the journey along the intricate paths and the lava rocks along the shore. We were not prepared for swimming, so we regretted not having brought swimming clothes and towels.

Town of Buenavista del Norte

Before heading to or from Punta de Teno, you should also visit the town of Buenavista del Norte.

It is famous for its beautiful nature, tranquility and traditional Canarian architecture. Buenavista del Norte is the perfect choice for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy the tranquility and natural beauty of nature. The town is located at the foot of the Teno Mountains.

Fish restaurant for the perfect end to your trip

El Burgado restaurant is the perfect end to a trip to Punta de Teno Lighthouse. Although the restaurant’s prices are on a par with Tenerife’s tourist spots, if you go when the sun goes down you won’t regret it. And the food is really good.

The El Burgado restaurant is one of Tenerife’s famous foodie attractions. This restaurant is famous for its great views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Los Gigantes cliffs. The restaurant specializes in traditional Canarian and Spanish cuisine, especially fish and seafood dishes. Visitors can enjoy freshly prepared dishes using local ingredients.

The restaurant’s location is particularly noteworthy, with outdoor tables, the ocean in the distance and springs running down from the mountains.
