Suwalki with children

Suwalki with children is a favourite destination of Agnė, one of the co-founders of “Travel4kids®”. Agnė often goes here with her family for a fun weekend. Suwalki is 200 km away from home and can be reached in 2.5 hours. So it’s quicker and easier for us than the Lithuanian seaside. Shopping and entertainment in Suwalki, Poland, and a trip to the Suwalki Water Park are within easy reach.

IMPORTANT! Although it’s a short trip, it’s still abroad, so make sure you have your identity cards or passports and car documents with you. Never risk going, especially if your child does not have an identity document. A birth certificate is not considered an identity document. For how to prepare for travelling with a baby, see our article Your first trip with a baby.

Suwalki with children – TOP attractions Suwalki Water Park

One of the most fun attractions in Suwalki, Poland, is the Suwalki Water Park. The Suwalki Water Park is ideal for those with younger children. Children are allowed to slide down all the slides and there are no height restrictions. The shallow slides into the water are well suited. For six-year-old Motiejus, the park is really ideal! For adults, there are several saunas and a jacuzzi. The prices are really low – two hours for adults is 25 zlotys (about 5,5 euro). We had a lot of fun in this park with our baby too.

Entertainment for children

Fun in Suwalki, Poland is never complete without a visit to the Suwalki plaza shopping centre. There’s an impressive ice skating rink spread over three floors of the shopping centre. The rink is free and gets a lot of attention from children.

There is also a small but fun Kinderplaneta playroom in the same shopping centre. 2 hours of fun for a child costs between €5 and €7, depending on the day of the week. A really fun place and a great way for your child to spend some time while you are shopping. In nice weather, it’s also fun to take a stroll in the city, with interactive fountains in the central square.

By the way, there are some very cool free playgrounds near the Suwalki Water Park. Very interesting and modern. We always stop there, Motiejus likes it very much.

Half price shop in Suwalki

If you go abroad or to Poland for shopping, you will know Tkmaxx. It’s a branded outlet where goods are half the price of chain stores. And during sales, you can find real gems for just a few euros. The closest store to Lithuania was in Bialystok. More recently, an almost identical Tkmaxx store, Half price! And in my opinion it has an even bigger and better selection than Tkmaxx. Shopping in Suwalki, Poland will now be even more fun! The store is located in the Multishop Shopping Centre.

Shopping in Suwalki

Suwalki has two major shopping centres – Suwalki Plaza and Multishop Suwalki.

In Multishop Suwalki you will find the Halfprice store described above, as well as budget clothing stores such as Kik, Tedi, Pepco, House, Cropp and others. There are also two large hardware stores. Our favourite food shop, Biedrionka, and a very large farm shop, OBI, are also nearby.

Suwalki Plaza is a large shopping area with many cafés, a children’s playroom and our much-loved skating rink. Here you will find H&M, Pandora, Medicine, Reserved. There is a very nice children’s shop SMYK. We highly recommend a visit, because you can really find great products at very good prices, especially during sales.

Food shops in Suwalki

Many people go to Poland for more than just industrial and grocery shopping. There are three main grocery stores – Biedrionka, Kaufland and Lidl.

Be sure to download the stores’ electronic discount cards to your mobile phone before you go! Currently the most popular grocery stores (Kaufland, Lidl, Biedrionka) allow you to register an account for a Polish card with a Lithuanian phone number! If you don’t want to register your cards just search the internet, you will find pictures of discount cards in various groups or forums! Just scan them at the cash desk and it works fine. You can really save a lot of money – shops often offer really good discounts or 1+1 promotions when you buy with the card.

We like Biedrionka best of all. It’s similar to the Lidl supermarket chain and doesn’t have a weighing section, but there’s a great selection of food. We also buy Polish Dada nappies here. They are really good quality, we bought them for our first-born and now we are using them for our second child. They often have a 1+1 sale, and the price without the sale is really good.

You can also find a lot of German products that we like in the Kaufland supermarket chain. Lidl in Poland has a similar assortment to Lidl in Lithuania. However, you will also find different products.

Other useful information

When in Poland, we always visit a pharmacy. Prices here are significantly different from those in Lithuania, and you can buy some medicines for half the price in Lithuania. Polish pharmacies also accept prescriptions from Lithuania. However, they must be in paper form. We like Apteka Gemini best. As far as we have shopped here, it usually has the best prices.

We go to Suwalki via the Lazdijai border post. There are two exchange offices just after it on the left hand side. They have similar exchange rates. They always give a better rate even without negotiation when exchanging a larger amount. And if you are exchanging a large amount, you can negotiate with confidence. Just don’t drive around. These exchange offices are located just after you cross the Lithuanian-Polish border. In the second house, further away from Lithuania, the staff have lollipops for children. So even though we are exchanging a small amount, we always stop.

A little further past the exchange offices is the well-known shop Vynoteka. Here you will find not only Vynoteka products, but also meat and groceries at really good prices. And Vynoteka’s prices for the main range are much better than in Lithuania.

Where to eat and where to stay in Suwalki

We highly recommend trying Kuchnia Tatarska u Alika. It’s a mix of Tatar, Slavic and oriental cuisine. Very nice surroundings and the food is really tasty. The portions are really big. Away from the city centre. There is a terrace in summer and a playground for children.

There are plenty of fast-food places in Suwalki plaza, so if you’re in a hurry, you’ll find a place to grab a bite to eat.

Browar Polnocny is right in the city centre. There is a car park nearby. The food is very tasty. Very cool surroundings. They brew beer on site. But most importantly, ask for toys, they have a huge box that they bring for children. We like it very much. The food is also very tasty.

If you are looking for homemade food or traditional Polish dishes and a country-style environment, Karczma Polska is the place for you.

There is a very good restaurant in the Loft Hotel. The prices are not low, but the food is very tasty. Even if we don’t stay at the hotel, we stop for a meal.

For accommodation, we usually choose the Loft1898 hotel near the Suwalki Water Park. It’s very tidy, very well equipped, very tasty breakfast. There is a large play area for children.

If we are travelling with a larger group we choose this apartment – Apartament Park nad Hańcza . Fantastically stylishly furnished. Accommodates 8 people.
