Panevėžys: what to see?

Vilanda, a mother of two children, shares her discoveries, experiences and recommendations, which we hope will be useful and inspire you to seek adventure. Vilanda has been working in the field of tourism for ten years. She likes to travel in his free time, and she has also infected her family with that. The family chooses trips responsibly and plans them by looking for recommendations. Before she had children, she traveled abroad, but after they were born, traveling around Lithuania and her native land became part of the family’s free time. Traveling with small children, giving them the joy of discovery – seems extremely important to this mother.

Manor of Bistrampoli

Located not far from the city of Panevėžys, the Bistrampoli Manor is a great choice for a short trip or escape from the city. The magnificent 1850s have survived to this day. manor palace was built.

A large territory of the manor, which includes 10 other buildings of the manor homestead ensemble, the oldest of which dates back to 1820. The well-kept manor park with comfortable paths, ponds and bridges is a great place for walks with children.

Arriving at the Manor

Upon arrival at the manor, you can pick up a map of the manor from the administration and go on a sightseeing tour. This small detail will become a serious challenge for children to find all the depicted objects. Find the carriage house, ice cream parlor, gardener’s house, rotunda, chapel and other features of the estate. With the help of the map, create a game that will make your stay at the manor even more interesting.

The main highlight of why this manor is so popular with children is the fallow deer. In the enclosure built in the former garden of the manor, the manor’s deer (fallow deer) graze and are particularly fond of the delicious meals brought by visitors. As soon as they see the guests coming, they gather around the fence waiting for the treats brought by the little visitors. They are happy to feast on apples or carrots. When driving, don’t forget to pack treats, the opportunity to feed the fallow deer from your hands, a real joy for children.

There is also a stable on the territory of the manor, where you can ride a horse, take a carriage ride or just admire the horses. You can put snacks from home and rest in the pavilion-rotunda of the park.

The manor has a restaurant where you can order food or hot drinks to take away. Next to the manor house there is a gazebo with tables, as well as a children’s playground.

Well-organized infrastructure, well-kept park, both children and adults will definitely like it.

Educational – cognitive “Girinio Takas” (Girinis Trail)

This educational and cognitive trail is an ideal place for family walks. Its length reaches only half a kilometer, so even a two-year-old can overcome this trail. You can safely travel on this path with a baby stroller, even the wheels of a sports bike roll perfectly on a good forest path.

The trail was installed in 2003 in the Varnakalnis forest of the Krekenava Forestry, right next to the Krekenava Forestry. It is easy to find, on the road Ramygala – Krekenava, from the main road there is a trail sign with an arrow.

About the Trail

An equipped parking lot with information boards informs you that you have arrived. The beginning of the educational trail is indicated by a wooden gate, next to which information is provided about the purpose of the trail to acquaint visitors with the forest, its structure and the works carried out in the natural environment, to train people to behave culturally in nature. The trail winds through a beautiful forest. Spring and awakening nature is a great time to visit such an educational trail and observe what is happening in nature. Do not be afraid to stray from the path into the forest, look for ants that have woken up with their children, blue fireflies. Improvise, let the children find a fallen fir tree and create a real hiding place by hiding under its branches.

Take your time and, while walking along the forest path, stop at the stops that provide interesting and clear information. There are five stops. At each stop, you will find educational information about the forest, trees, forest protection measures, logging. Tell the children what grows in the forest, who lives in the forest. Listen to the sounds of the forest. At the end of the trail stands Girini’s cabin-gazebo, where photos of forest animals and birds, drawings and creative works of young forest visitors are exhibited.

The Lookout Tower

There is a lookout tower nearby, which overlooks the picturesque valley and cliff of the Linkava stream. Spring, while the trees are still leafless, is the best time for that, when you can see the bends and cliffs of the stream. Children especially liked the tower, which became a real fairy house.

You can rest and sit on benches near the stops, there is a campfire in the valley. The end of the trail is marked by a bench with Maironis’ words on it. And here the educational trail ends. However, there are animal enclosures near the forestry that you can also visit. Fallow deer and mouflon graze in the enclosures, but they approach the fence timidly, so you are not always lucky to see them.

Rapolas Stone

Next to the educational “Girinio tako” on the right bank of the Linkava stream, there is a glacier-hardened stone with a unique name – Rapolas. A beautiful track leads to it. Due to its impressive size: 14.54 m in circumference, 2.55 in height, 5.14 m in length and 4.18 m in width, it has since 1964 declared a protected natural monument. The unusual name of the stone is associated with the nearby 20th century. who lived as the owner of the homestead. Due to the size of the stone, local residents and visiting visitors often call Rapolas a relative of “Puntukas”. There is a path built towards the stone, it is fun for children to get right to the stone lying in the water. And its impressive size will surely surprise children.

Krekenava regional park observation tower

The town of Krekenava is really famous throughout Lithuania. As soon as you enter it, you are greeted by the towers of the majestic church. These are not the only towers here. In the territory of the Krekenava regional park visitor center in 2014. a steel asymmetric observation tower with spacers was built. Its height is 30 m. The observation deck is located 25 m above the ground. Not everyone dares to climb to the top of the tower, but climbing at least a few steps is fun for everyone. From the tower, you can admire the Nevėžis valley and view the surrounding territories at a distance of about 10 km on a clear day.

Next to the tower, there is a well-maintained area with many interesting activities for children, a gazebo, swings, gravel paths, and outdoor toilets. There is a fun trail next to the tower, take a trip on the “Trail of the Senses”.

Sensory trail

Children will especially enjoy this trail. Walking along this path will give you a pleasant experience. Everything can be touched, climbed, slipped into. Various sensations await you at the stops along the trail. The most interesting thing is that at each stop there will be different tasks that you will have to complete. A trail ride is like a fun game for the whole family. You will test the strength of the wind in the swing, create your own melody, test different surfaces of the earth barefoot, feel the energy of the tree in the wooden bed, listen to the sounds of nature in the headphones, try a natural tree massage, climb the climbing frame, hang out on the floating linden, relax in the rest area and have a good time admiring the scenery of the Nevėžis valley.

A picturesque trail

For those who want to take a picture, there is a photo frame on the trail with a natural view of the valley. Try to feel, understand, hear what the wind, earth, trees, water will tell you. Take your time. Admire the glittering strip of the river, embellished with woven patterns of water plants, listen to the rustling of trees, touch the gifts of the earth, taking in the energy of life – you will become a part of nature.

Educational trail of the Nevėžis river valley

Winding through the territory of the Krekenava Regional Park, Nevēžis with its old rivers creates a special landscape. In the Krekenava Regional Park, there are about 100 old thieves of various shapes. Along one of them, a horseshoe-shaped old road, this educational trail of the Nevėžis river valley winds.

The trail is great for walks for the whole family, both young and old. You can also go down this path with a wheelchair, the paths are perfect for this, in some places they are made of natural soil, in others they are equipped with wooden ones. The length of the educational trail is 1.6 km.

This trail can be traveled in all seasons and observe the change of nature during different seasons. In the spring – flooded meadows and flocks of migrating birds, in the summer blooming meadows and marshes, and in the winter to watch the ice-bound river channels.

Finding the Trail

You can easily find the trail by turning south, about 2 km from Krekenava. The location of the trail is indicated by the road sign on the right. The infrastructure of the trail is well organized – there are children’s playgrounds, rest areas, benches with tables, changing cabins, outdoor toilets. – everything you need for a fun and comfortable vacation. The trail starts at the sign “Link to old men”, after a short walk you can immediately see a 6 m high observation tower.

And this, like the other towers, was very liked by the children. From the tower, you can look around the Nevėžys old canals – former parts of the river bed, which are now separated from the new bed. If you’re lucky, you can observe various types of birds from the tower, many of which live in old barns. Bird species are written on a nearby stand. It is really worth taking a walk among the old thieves of Nevėžys, the children really liked the different landscape and the discovery of new experiences. This trail is one of the most impressive trails in Lithuania, which is definitely worth a walk.

Upytė mound or Čičinskas mountain

A mound surrounded by legends about an evil lord who once lived and his wealthy estate stands near Upytė. A hill covered with trees can be seen from a distance from the main road, which is already interesting for children through the car window.

There is a car parking lot, information stands, a table with information about the object, a rest area with a gazebo and benches, outdoor toilets. A gravel path leads to the mound. The territory of the mound is organized.

Vešeta lake used to surround the mound, now it is a small stream. It is believed that the XIII-XVI centuries. The castle, which stood on the top of a 4-5 m hill, was the center of Upytė land, which included the present Panevėžys district. XVII-XVIII centuries. Polish nobleman Vladislaw Sicinskis, who is known to be the first to use the liberum veto right to dissolve the Seimas, had his estate in Papilio. This mound is best known by the name of Chičinska Hill. According to a local legend, the cruel Čičinskas was struck by lightning for his sins, and his entire estate burned to the ground, hence the name of the hill – “Čičinskas hill”.

The Bridge

After crossing the bridge, climbing the stairs, you find yourself in a large area with a ravine in the middle. In this place, it is believed that the manor of Mr. It’s a great place for children, let them look for the old manor, maybe at least some old key or thing from the former manor can be found? Go search like real archaeologists. And what a great joy to find an old tree stump and a treasure hidden there! Get ready for small surprises, which, if hidden, will be a real joy to find. It’s nice to walk on top of the mound, good paths, benches, renovated stairs.

Linen Museum

A real mill with wings, like from a fairy tale – as soon as you turn into the territory, you hear a shout. Indeed, a real mill, this is the old Stultiškii mill, built in 1880. An interesting fact is that the mill was built around a mighty pine tree, which was later cut down, and the millstones were attached around its trunk.

Today, the mill no longer grinds flour, but is perfectly adapted for tourism purposes. The three-story mill houses a museum where you can get acquainted with the 19th century. linen processing method, see ancient linen processing and household tools, find out the way of linen from stem to cloth, see weaving looms. At the entrance to the mill, you are greeted by a wooden devil who guards the mill.

Arrengement

The territory is arranged and adapted for visiting. There are three gazebos with benches and tables, where it is fun to sit and have lunch, and outdoor toilets. Good access, there is a parking lot with information stands, an information board with detailed information about the object.

The children liked it, it is a unique object that fascinates with its authenticity and beautiful territory.

Vadaktėliai suspension bridge over Nevēžis

A great stop on your way to the Museum of Bookkeeping. The bridge is on the left, visible from the road Naujamiestis – Krekenava. A wooden bridge hanging on ropes, which is simply fun to walk on, to admire the wonderful landscape. If children have not seen such a bridge, then it is necessary to stop and walk on it. 37 m long, hanging on ropes, it is also called the “monkey bridge”. Lieptas connects not only the different banks of Nevėžis, but also two boroughs: Krekenava and Naujamiestis.

Museum of J. Tumos-Vaižgant and Booksellers

The only museum of booksellers in the whole country is known as the place of one of the largest gatherings of the booksellers community “Garšviai”. The museum tells about a unique period in the history of Lithuania. An unpaved but decent road leads to the museum. The museum is located in a beautiful valley with a stream winding through it, a real joy for children in summer. An old oak barn with stone foundations can be seen in the distance. It was in this barn that the banned Lithuanian press was hidden. Svirnas is associated with the activities of the writer Juozas-Tumos Vaižgantas, his pastorate in Vadatkėliai in 1902-1905. The writer helped the booksellers sort the press, hide it, collected donations for the printing of Lithuanian literature, liked to rest on the second floor of the barn. The territory is arranged, suitable for visiting, information stands and benches are installed.
