Holidays in Spain with Children

It is said that early autumn is the perfect time to travel to warm countries like Spain. Cooler temperatures and fewer tourists make it easier to explore the country in a stress-free way, avoiding crowds. In this article, Holidays in Spain with Children, we share the top destinations and the best attractions!

Spain is a big country with many islands. Living in Tenerife, we’re constantly travelling around Spain and discovering new places that we parents love as much as the kids. However, if you are not a local, you may have many questions. Which is the best destination for family travel? What are the most popular attractions? Where is the best place to stay with children? Holidays in Spain with Children is a guide to all these questions.

Holidays in Spain with Children

Some of the most popular tourist destinations in Spain are the islands of Tenerife, Mallorca and Gran Canaria, as well as the country’s capital Barcelona and the nearby cities of Malaga, Costa Brava and Costa Dorada. All of these locations are full of sun, sandy beaches, interesting museums, impressive churches, verdant gardens and other natural wonders. So if a holiday in Spain with children is on your travel plans, you’ll definitely benefit from this guide to activities, places to visit and the best hotels for families.

Holidays in Spain with Children – Tenerife

Tenerife is the largest and most popular tourist island in the Canary Islands and home to the family of Jolita, one of the founders of Travel 4 Kids. Since it’s not our first year living here, we’ve been to a lot of interesting free places, tried a lot of attractions and tasted a lot of different dishes. Tenerife is an island of spectacular beauty and we recommend it to everyone.

What are the Best Places to Visit in Tenerife?

Teide National Park

Teide National Park is the largest park in the Canary Islands. A unique landscape of craters, volcanoes and fossilised lava surrounds the spectacular Teide volcano, located at an altitude of 3,718 metres above sea level. Teide Park has 41 marked trails of varying difficulty and duration, 3 visitor centres and a cable car.

We love the Roques de Garcia tarck. The 3.5 km route goes around a spectacular series of rocks that can be seen from the whole valley. The start of the track is flat and accessible, but there is a climb to the north from the rocks. Part of it is adapted for people with mobility problems, so it is also possible to go by carrying a baby with a stroller.

Tips: take water and energy-dense foods such as fruit or nuts, and wear suitable footwear for the rocky mountain terrain. Also, always have a wind jacket and, if you are travelling in the winter months or in the evening, a thicker jacket and hat. If you are travelling in summer, remember that the sun is strong in the mountains, so it is highly recommended to apply sun cream and wear a cap.

Siam Water Park

The largest water park in the Canaries and even in Europe. The park is located outdoors. The park is reminiscent of Thailand – all the scenery, plants and names of the rides are carefully thought out. The park was opened by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand herself. For several years, this water park has been selected as the best park in the world on Tripadvisor!

The park is well-kept and maintained, and parents and adrenaline-loving children over the age of 7 will find plenty of activities. More than 20 rides and a separate area for younger children. Children are given life jackets free of charge for safety reasons. However, the price of admission is quite high, especially if you want to visit with the whole family. The park is particularly crowded in high season, and you have to queue for the more interesting rides.

In the article “Siam and Loro Park tickets cheaper”, we share up-to-date information on how to save money when visiting this water park. And in the article “TOP50 Entertainment Venues in Tenerife with Children”, you’ll find more activities suitable for the whole family.

Mirador La Tarta Viewpoint

One of the roads to Teide and one of the best spots on the island to see the volcano and appreciate the different geological layers of Las Cañadas. Even the name comes from the colours that can be seen as layers of cake. La Tarta del Teide is located at a bend in the road, with viewpoints on both sides. The views of the Teide are also unique.

For more viewpoints in Tenerife, see the article “Top 30 Viewpoints in Tenerife with Children”.

Punta de Teno Lighthouse

Punta de Teno is one of Tenerife’s least known spots, which only adds to the charm of this secluded spot. It is the westernmost point of Tenerife and here you can find like from the picture taken lighthouse. Vertical cliffs, laurel forests and volcanic rocks coexist in the same space to create a unique island environment. From the small bay of Punta de Teno, you can see the cliffs of Los Gigantes and the panorama of La Gomera.

Punta de Teno has been a protected area for several years, which makes it necessary to regulate traffic and avoid crowds. For this reason, the only way to get to Punta de Teno is to take bus number 369, which departs hourly from the Buenavista Norte bus station, from 10 am to 7 pm in the autumn, winter and spring, and from 9 am to 8 pm in the summer. The bus ticket costs EUR 1 to both sides. The journey from the bus stop to Punta de Teno takes about 20 minutes and the road is really narrow and high. You will get stunning views of the cliffs.

We have prepared a separate article about this place.

Tenerife Carnival

If you’re planning to visit Tenerife between February and March, Tenerife Carnival is a must. Tenerife Carnival is one of the biggest carnivals in the world – second only to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil – for its glamour, the quality and authenticity of its competitions, street parties and concerts. Every year, this carnival surprises with new themes, spectacular costumes and amazing performances. And if you can’t make it to the carnival, be sure to visit the Carnival Museum, where you’ll find a permanent exhibition of costumes and unique carnival elements.
