Dry skin care during travel

When planning trips, we usually think about tickets, entertainment, and luggage. And how often do we think that we need to take care of our skin when we travel? Although when traveling to warm countries, especially with children, we believe that mothers do not forget the necessary sun protection measures. However, it does not matter whether we travel to warm countries or to snowy mountains, not only ourselves, but also our skin needs to adapt to the new environment. And the skin has to experience a lot of challenges – dry airplane air, climate changes, exposure to sunlight, wind and water. Therefore, dry skin care during travel is no less important than sun protection.

More than once, we have had to feel how a plane flight or constant stay in different climate zones “tires” the skin. Therefore, over time we have discovered several ways to mitigate this effect as much as possible. In this article, we will share how to take care of dry skin during travel and what care products to have on every trip to keep your skin healthy regardless of the environment.

Dry skin care during travel. Why does the skin get dry during travel?

Dry skin is a common problem when traveling, even for those who don’t normally have skin concerns. Therefore, dry skin care during travel is a very important part.

One of the main reasons is the effect of different climate zones and rapid weather changes. Air humidity can vary greatly. In drier climates, there is a lack of moisture, so it is “pulled” from the skin, causing it to dry out or even shrivel. In colder regions, heaters dry indoor air, and in warm regions, air conditioners are used. Both reduce indoor humidity, which also dries out our skin.

Sudden temperature changes stress the skin because it has to adapt quickly to the changed environment. In addition, such changes affect the skin’s protective barrier, i.e. the skin loses lipids that help retain moisture. This not only promotes moisture loss but also increases the skin’s sensitivity to external factors.

Another reason for dry skin during travel is the dry air on airplanes. The humidity level in airplanes can drop as low as 10-20%, significantly lower than normal levels. This causes dryness and an unpleasant feeling of stretching the skin. We have definitely felt it more than once. Although we try to drink as much water as possible during flights, it does not always help.

Long journeys by car, bus or train also dry out the skin, especially if air conditioners or heaters are used during the journey. As we mentioned earlier, they strongly affect the condition of the skin.

And, of course, the skin is exposed to the sun, wind, sand, water, and cold during travel.

We probably don’t need to convince you anymore that dry skin care is very important when traveling. Below we will discuss what daily skin care should be while traveling.

Daily care for dry skin during travel

While traveling often, we have learned how to take care of our skin to keep it healthy no matter where we travel. Here are some tips for daily care:

Gentle cleaning. Since the skin becomes more sensitive during travel, you should choose gentle cleaning products that do not damage the skin barrier.

Moistening. Moisturizing your skin while traveling is very important. Take care of moisturizing creams. You can also moisturize your skin with special face or body mists during your trip.

Environmental protection measures. When traveling, even in winter, it is necessary to protect the skin from harmful UV rays. We recommend taking products with SPF with you on all trips. You can learn more about SPF products in our article Why should you use sun cosmetics?.

Face masks. We often enjoy trying different face masks while traveling. Sometimes we indulge in them at spa centers, and other times we treat our skin in the evenings before bed in the hotel room. Additional skin hydration certainly won’t hurt.

Hand and lip care. Probably most of the time, when we go on trips, we forget that we need to take care of the skin of our hands and lips. Although both hands and lips also suffer from dryness during travel. So put moisturizing hand cream and lip vaseline or a moisturizing lip mask in your luggage.

How to take care of the skin when the climate zones change?

As we have already mentioned, we inevitably face skin challenges when traveling with strong changes in climate. The skin struggles to adapt quickly and loses its ability to retain moisture. For example, we remember when we had to fly from wintery Lithuania to hot Asia. At first it was cold, the skin was irritated by the heating and dry air on the plane, and after landing in the tropics, it suddenly became humid and hot. Already on the same day, we felt the skin stretching, drying, and the body was asking for hydration. Here are the ways we’ve discovered to help you cope with the effects of a rapidly changing climate on your skin:

Adapt your skin care routine to your destination. If you’re traveling from a cooler climate to a warmer climate, we recommend choosing moisturizers with a lighter texture that don’t weigh the skin down. They will not only moisturize the skin, but also protect against clogging of pores. And, conversely, if you are flying to cold regions, take care of oilier skin moisturizers. They form a protective shield that protects the skin from the cold.

Skin care during travel. Especially if you are traveling by plane, car or train for a long time, try to moisturize your skin as often as possible. Of course, you don’t need to apply facial skin creams often. However, as we mentioned before, you can keep moisturizing your face with a special mist. Well, don’t skimp on moisturizing creams for the skin of the body, hands, and lips, this way you will avoid dehydration during the trip itself.

Don’t forget the water. As climate zones change, drink as much water as possible during your trip. Drinking water helps maintain moisture balance throughout the body, including the skin.
