Best sun cosmetics for children

Catching the sun is essential for children, and not just in summer. Children are growing up fast, bones are getting stronger and moods are improving! But children’s friendship with the sun is only fun and healthy if they take the 5 most important precautions and use quality sun cosmetics. So what are the best sun cosmetics for children? Which ones do we use and which ones do we want to recommend to you.

The dangers of the sun for toddlers – why you should use sun cosmetics for children?

The sun boosts a child’s immunity, its ultraviolet rays stimulate the body to produce vitamin D, which regulates calcium metabolism and strengthens bones. The sun is also useful in the treatment of some skin diseases. However, a child’s skin is particularly sensitive and not yet fully formed, so the sun’s rays penetrate the deeper layers of the skin, increasing the chance of sunburn. In addition, prolonged exposure to the sun can also expose a child to sunstroke. So if you have children or babies, the best sun cosmetics for children are the most important summer accessory for you.

It may seem basic – a few simple precautions are all it takes to protect your child’s skin today and preserve their health for the future. But many parents still don’t take the dangers of the sun seriously, and put it down to luck – oh, maybe he won’t get a sunburn, we won’t be gone long, there are a few clouds, it’s not the first time the sun shines too brightly here, it’s not the first time he’s been in the sun, and he’s got his hat on.

Irreversible damage.

Doctors point out that when a baby is sunburnt, the damage to the deeper layers of the skin lasts a lifetime, even when nothing is visible on the outside. And unfortunately, this can have lifelong consequences – the chances of ever developing skin cancer after a sunburn increase dramatically.

Sun allergie.

By the way, have you heard of sun allergies? Some children’s unprotected skin can react very sensitively to the sun and cause so-called sun allergy, so if you notice that your child’s skin has started to show red dots or spots, you shouldn’t be out in the sun. If the rash persists, it is advisable to see a doctor as soon as possible.

  • Prescription acne medications can also make the skin more sensitive to the sun.

5 tips to protect children’s skin in summer

Shelter babies from direct sun

Their skin is still very thin and sensitive. It is not advisable to use any sunscreen on babies until they are 6 months old, unless absolutely necessary, so the best way is to shelter them from direct sunlight. In summer, it’s enough for a baby to sit in the shade, under an umbrella or enjoy the sun through the cracks in the trees.

Avoid peak hours

Don’t go out in the sun between 11am and 4pm, when it is most active. Even in the shade, your child gets about 40 per cent of the sun at this time! The sun is most dangerous when playing in the sand or near water. Sand reflects up to 20 per cent of the sun’s rays and water reflects ~10 per cent of the sun’s rays, so their effect is amplified. Concrete also reflects heat, so even in the city a child can easily overheat or suffer a heat stroke.

Appropriate clothing

Dress your baby in clothes that cover the body, such as comfortable lightweight long trousers, a long-sleeved shirt, and a hat that covers the face and ears from the sun. The lighter the colour, the better, as it reflects light and prevents overheating. Choose natural fabrics (linen, cotton) or specialised clothing with UV protection.

Consume plenty of fluids

Both children and adults should drink plenty of water to maintain the skin’s moisture reserves and prevent overheating.

Sunscreen

For children’s skin, it is particularly important to choose special products tailored to their needs, preferably with mineral filters. Children’s skin needs particularly high SPF protection and UVA and UVB filters. Children love to play in water, so it is best to choose water-resistant products. Sensitive skin can be irritated by certain substances, so dyes, fragrances and parabens should be avoided.

The best sun cosmetics for children and babies

As with every “baby” product, it’s quite difficult to choose the right sunscreen/emulsion/lotion for children, and especially for babies. So how do they differ? What are the best sun cosmetics for children.

All sunscreens (for both children and adults) use chemical and mineral filters to protect against UVA and UVB rays, but the principle of functioning differs. Chemical filters absorb UV rays and convert their energy into thermal heat, so you feel warm. Mineral filters, on the other hand, reflect or scatter the UV rays that reach the surface of the treated skin, so that the rays cannot penetrate the skin.

Mineral filters create a protective barrier, making them particularly suitable for use on babies, young children and anyone whose skin is particularly sensitive to the sun.

Our favourites are the DERMEDIC SUNBRELLA BABY line, which we have been buying for several summers in a row, both for our eldest children and now for our baby. Initially enticed by the excellent formulation and friendly price, we liked the consistency and effectiveness of Sunbrella so much that we couldn’t think of any others.

What makes DERMEDIC SUNBRELLA BABY special?

  • 4-Spectrum Protection – A broad-spectrum, 4-level protection system for children’s delicate skin against UVA, UVB, infrared and visible radiation provides a very high level of comprehensive sun protection.
  • The lotion and cream contain the innovative active ingredient Aqua-proVita D3, a precursor of vitamin D3. When exposed to UVB rays, it is converted into vitamin D3, soothing irritations, maintaining the skin’s barrier functions and the epidermis’s cycle of biological renewal.
  • Perfectly tolerated by children’s sensitive skin, even suitable for babies!
  • Dermatological
  • Soothes and moisturises the skin.
  • Hypoallergenic.
  • Clinically tested.

We have used both spray and spreadable lotions, as different options are more convenient in different situations. And besides, you know – with all the beach shovels and bathing suits, that cream or spray always gets lost somewhere, so it’s a good idea to have a spare tube in your backpack.

Overheating and heatstroke

It is equally important to avoid overheating and possible heatstroke in babies and children. How to recognise it?

Overheating:

  • If the baby is crying, sweating, restless, he/she has overheated.
  • Overheating can happen even in a hot car or in a stuffy room and is very dangerous for a small child.
  • How to help? As soon as possible, take the child to a shady or cool room (avoid draughts), take off or at least wash his/her clothes and give him/her a cool (not cold!) drink, and put a cold compress on the head.
  • If the child is very overheated, the temperature may rise to about 37.5° C. An older child should feel better in 2-3 days and should be seen by a doctor. If the child vomits, complains of headaches or dizziness, medical attention is needed regardless of age.

Heatstroke:

  • Sunstroke causes the body to react more strongly. The skin becomes dry and hot, the child becomes drowsy and may lose consciousness.
  • How to help? The child should be taken away or taken to a cooler room immediately. Take him/her out, put a cold compress on the forehead, cool the body with cold clothes (sheet, towel), and give him/her a cool drink (mineral water, juice diluted with mineral water, lukewarm tea).
  • If the child has a fever, give paracetamol or ibuprofen. Give a spoonful of water every 3-5 minutes to a vomiting child (drinking very little will not cause vomiting). We recommend that you have an oral rehydration solution at home. After these steps, the temperature should gradually drop.
  • Immediate medical attention is needed if you suspect sunstroke or heatstroke has struck your baby. No matter how old your child is, see a doctor when the temperature reaches 39-40 degrees or is lower but does not start to drop within an hour.
