A trip to Montenegro with children

Montenegro is a country of stunning beauty in the central part of the western Balkans. With its Dinaric mountains, Adriatic coastline, romantic towns and sunny beaches, Montenegro attracts more and more tourists every year. Perhaps a trip to Montenegro with children is your next family adventure?

Beautiful nature, delicious food, lots of places to visit and low prices – that’s what a trip to Montenegro with children was like for Julia, a mother of 3.

A trip to Montenegro with children

We are a family from Salcininkai, with 3 children aged 6, 10 and 18. We often travel together by car, and our son wants to be a pilot when he graduates from school, so maybe in the future we will be able to fly in a plane that he pilots. We have been to Spain and Croatia, the Canary Islands, Mallorca, Greece and many other European countries. Apart from travelling, we run a beloved family business – we have been inflating balloons for more than 10 years.

Travelling in Montenegro

Travelling in Montenegro

We visited Montenegro several times. The first time was on our way to Croatia, and the following year, because everyone loved it so much the first time, we stayed longer and visited more places.

First trip to Montenegro

“The first time we were in Montenegro was in 2022, when we travelled to Croatia by car. I really liked the nature, the many mountains and the beautiful sea”, says Julia. We drove with 2 stops and overnight stays, as we only left home around 2 pm. The first stop was in Poland, and we chose our accommodation on the drive. The next stop was in Bosnia (we didn’t know we had to go through this country), and we stayed the night there. Everywhere there are toll roads, either you need a vignette or there are machines where you have to pay. And the next day we got to the hotel around lunchtime.

Accommodation and meals

Hotel Iberostar Bellevue, located in Budva, was booked through booking.com, with meals included. We chose this hotel because of the good reviews. The hotel is very good, we liked the food very much, there is everything you need there. We ate seafood almost every night, there are many different drinks, juices, cocktails for the kids, there are snacks, ice cream, coffee. The rooms are tidy, cleaned every day. There is animation (strong), a kids club where kids can be almost every day. Well-kept grounds. And lots of Lithuanians. Many arrive with travel passes, there is a flight to Tivat. The hotel is on the seafront, only the beach is not secluded, so you have to pay about 10 euro for 2 beds per day.

We found the nature in Montenegro very nice, a little lack of cleanliness, you can see from the construction rubbish along the roads, but the natural beauty makes up for everything. There is a tourist agency next to the hotel, there are a lot of war migrants there, and Ukrainians have taken up a lot of jobs. They have one language (Montenegro, Croatia, Serbia), but everyone calls it their own (Croatian, Serbian). It is also very similar to Polish, Russian. Since we know both Polish and Russian, we could easily understand them. But you can also speak in English and be understood easily.

Attractions

We went on a day excursion by boat. The kids really enjoyed it. We took a bus to Kotor town, had a short excursion there, then a boat trip across the Bay of Kotor, there was a café on board, and you could have a meal. We visited other towns and had time to swim in the sea. We also visited churches and monasteries, with a guide everywhere. In the evening we returned to the hotel. The children were tired, but happy. They enjoyed both the boat ride and the swimming.

As we had our own car, in the evenings we just found a “place to visit” in the “maps” (and there are a lot of them) and went on our way. We also visited the nearby towns, and it’s beautiful everywhere. We also had a family photo shoot. We found a photographer before we went, who arranged a photo shoot for us early in the morning on the day before we went, while the tourists were still asleep, although the kids weren’t too happy about it,” laughs Julia.

Second trip to Montenegro

In 2023 we decided to go to the same hotel, but for a longer stay (10 days), and we booked the hotel right away for the first departure. We opted for an all-inclusive package so that we didn’t have to worry about drinks and snacks.

This time we took a different route because we wanted to visit the north of Montenegro. We went through Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Serbia. The nature in Serbia is also very beautiful. We had 2 nights in the town of Zabljak, and we visited Durmitor Park, which is very beautiful, with lots of walks and things to see. And then we went all the way across Montenegro to the sea, to the same hotel. We spent 10 days there, and there were also a lot of tourists from Lithuania, even the whole company came for a few days.

Places to visit

This time we also went wherever we found “Place to visit” and unexpectedly we discovered a monastery on a cliff called “Ostrog Monastery”, breathtaking views, high above the sea, I don’t remember how many metres now. But you’ll have to climb up a bit. It’s a holy place, I would recommend everyone to go.

It’s also worth going to the wineries, there are so many of them all over the country. You can book a trip through an agency, we just found one on the internet, called and went. We went to a wine tasting in Plantaze, they are located in a former NATO military base. They give an interesting talk about how and what kind of wine is made, and a tasting. The children tasted homemade juices. They enjoyed a tour of the former military base.

When asked if there were any activities that the family would not repeat, she said that she would not go boating on Lake Shkodra – it is not a very spectacular place, and it is very hot when boating.

Montenegro cuisine

The food everywhere is delicious, it reminds me of European food, because in Turkey I did not like the food very much, but here everything is very nice. I would recommend grilled squid, it is very tasty in both Croatia and Montenegro.

We would also definitely recommend visiting oyster farms, you will find them in the bay where they are grown. They offer both shrimps and fish, all fresh and made on the spot near you. They also always have homemade wine and homemade juice for the children. My children had shrimps, and it was very tasty for them.

In general, the prices are similar to Lithuania, some things are a bit cheaper, but there is no significant difference.
