Venice with children

Venice is a unique and romantic destination that often serves as a film set. While the city is mostly known as a romantic getaway, there are plenty of activities and attractions suitable for families with children.

One of the founders of “Travel 4 Kids” Jolita’s family with Greta and Oskaras visited Venice. Greta’s dream of seeing Venice came true quite unexpectedly – we had a six-hour layover, and we managed to explore Venice! The “Venice with children” plan – accomplished.

The most impressive feature of Venice, not just for children, is undoubtedly its canals and countless bridges. Did you know that Venice boasts 150 canals and 435 bridges?

Be sure to visit the stunning St. Mark’s Square (Piazza San Marco), St. Mark’s Basilica (Basilica di San Marco), and St. Mark’s Bell Tower (Campanile di San Marco). Take a walk to the Rialto Bridge (Ponte di Rialto), one of the oldest and most iconic bridges in Venice. Nearby, you’ll find the Rialto Market, where you can discover fresh fruits, fish, and other local products.

Any stroll through the city will fill you with wonderful emotions. However, stay alert – where there are more tourists and narrow streets, pickpockets tend to be more active.

Children will undoubtedly enjoy a ride on the vaporetto, Venice’s public water bus. It’s not only an exciting experience but also a fantastic way to see the city from the water. Tickets can be conveniently and quickly booked online.

The highlight, however, will surely be a gondola ride. To avoid overpaying, we’ve found a truly great offer for you.

Don’t miss visiting the islands of Murano, Burano, and Torcello. Murano is famous for its glassworks, Burano for its colorful houses and embroidery, and Torcello offers historical landmarks as well as open spaces where kids can run and play freely.

Museums in Venice with children

Visit the “Creature di Gomma” exhibition in Venice, a must-see if you have some extra time. Take a trip down memory lane and relive your childhood while admiring an impressive collection of 6,000 vintage toys. Plus, the tickets are very affordable.

Another great spot is the Leonardo da Vinci Museum, showcasing models of da Vinci’s inventions, which you can touch and try out. It’s an excellent place for curious kids eager to explore the wonders of science and engineering. Tickets are available at a very reasonable price.

What time of year to visit?

The best time to visit Venice is in spring or autumn, when the weather is pleasant and tourist crowds are minimal. In spring, temperatures usually range between 10 and 18°C, though occasional rain means it’s advisable to bring an umbrella or raincoat. Autumn remains warm, particularly in September, with temperatures ranging from 15 to 25°C. As October and November progress, the weather cools down, and rainy days become more frequent.

In summer, Venice can get very hot, and there are a lot of tourists.

Winter, while cold, offers a unique experience, especially during the Venice Carnival. This iconic and colorful festival is one of the most famous in the world, drawing thousands of visitors from every corner of the globe each year.

Venice with children – tips

  • Accommodation. If you’re planning a longer stay, be sure to book your accommodation in advance. Additionally, we highly recommend considering lodging options outside the city center.

  • Food. To save money, consider dining outside the city center. We are in Venice, but we found freshly baked pizzas at the approaches.
  • Getting to Venice from Treviso Airport. It’s very convenient to purchase bus tickets that will take you to the approaches of Venice’s old town in less than an hour.
  • Treviso’s old town is nestled between two rivers, the Sile and the Cagnan. It features well-preserved medieval buildings, charming narrow streets, and graceful little bridges. The town is surrounded by intact walls and defensive towers. From Venice, Treviso is easily reachable by train in about 30 minutes.
