Travelling around Tunisia with children

After a long winter and a transitional spring, we can’t wait to put on our swimming suits and “recharge” on vitamin D with the family, whether relaxing on the beach or recovering with a relaxing spa treatment. All this and more in our guide – Travelling around Tunisia with children.

While many people think of Turkey when they dream of a sunny holiday, we invite you to explore Tunisia, a holiday destination that is becoming increasingly popular among tourists. Travelling around Tunisia with children is an unforgettable experience for those who want sun, new experiences and relaxation. And for adventure and culture enthusiasts, we’ve put together 16 places to visit in Tunisia, where you’ll get to know the country’s culture and landscape.

Travelling around Tunisia with children – the best time to visit

Tunisia is the smallest country in North Africa, but more than twice the size of Lithuania. The landscape is extremely varied, with mountains in the north and desert in the south, covering as much as 40% of the country. Temperatures vary greatly depending on the terrain. The best time to visit is in late spring (April-May), when the average temperature is around 17-20 degrees Celsius, with little rain and possible swimming in the sea. Temperatures are slightly higher in autumn (late September – October), with temperatures of 22-25 degrees, very warm water and a little more rain. We don’t recommend coming in the summer, as it’s very hot – often 40 degrees or more – and in the winter it’s quite chilly at 12-13 degrees.

Top attractions around Tunis

Tunis is a small city in the north of Tunisia. Located near the sea and around two lakes, it is the capital of the country. The city is rich in Roman heritage, impressive architectural buildings, parks and museums. Nearby is the city of Carthage, which we also highly recommend visiting. You can get there in 20 minutes from Tunis by renting a car.

Baths of Antoninus (Carthage)

The largest Roman-built baths in Africa. Today, only the ruins of the baths remain. However, it is one of the most visited places in Tunisia. It also has a view of the sea. There aren’t many signs with information and local history as you walk around, so it’s a good idea to visit with a guide.

Saint Louis Cathedral (Carthage)

Near the ruins of Carthage, this beautiful 19th-century cathedral stands in a magnificent setting. You can also visit the inside of the cathedral for an extra fee.

El Abidine Mosque (Carthage)

A large mosque with a tower. Not everyone is allowed inside, but it’s worth a look, at least from the outside. Close to the sea.

Oceanographic Museum (Carthage)

A very fun place to visit with children. Although the museum is small, if you’re in the area, it’s worth a visit. Tickets, as everywhere, are very inexpensive. Inside there are aquariums with local fish cultures, turtles. Here children can learn more about nature and aquatic animals.

National Museum of Bardo (Tunis)

In this museum you will learn about the history of Tunisia and see many impressive mosaics and sculptures. Entrance costs around 4 euros. The museum is quite large, so there will be plenty to see for at least 2-3 hours.

Kasbah Square (Tunis)

A large, spacious square in the centre of the city with a monument in the middle. Convenient to visit on the way to or from the Medina.

Medina of Tunis (in Tunis)

This site in Tunis is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will see many mosaics, fountains and ancient buildings. There are plenty of shops where you can buy various souvenirs. We recommend taking a morning stroll here when it’s not so crowded.

Top attractions around Enfidha

A small town close to the sea, it has an airport and easy access to other surrounding tourist towns.

Enfidha Museum (Enfidha)

An ancient Christian church, now converted into a museum with mosaics and ancient pottery.

City of Takrouna

A small town on a hill near Enfidha, inhabited by two families. Here you will see the ruins of an ancient town and a wonderful panorama. We recommend that you come here with a car, as it can be difficult for children to climb the hill.
