Tiny Canary Island La Graciosa

“Travel 4 Kids® shares useful tips and information about places to visit with children in the Canary Islands.

La Graciosa, a tiny Canary Island just north of Lanzarote, is a true paradise for those looking for peace and quiet and places that are still little known to tourists. It’s quite right that we called it the Caribbean of the Canaries. The white, clean beaches reminded us of those we once visited in Cuba… If you’re visiting Lanzarote, make sure you visit this island – we promise you won’t be disappointed!

Tiny Canary Island La Graciosa

La Graciosa is known for its unspoilt sandy beaches and emerald waters.

With less than 700 inhabitants, every visitor to the island can feel as if they have discovered a hidden paradise. Here, in the town of Caleta de Sebo, which is where you’ll arrive from Lanzarote, you’ll find traditional white-painted houses and many local fish and seafood restaurants.

The locals pride themselves on their calmness and hospitality, making any traveller feel at home.

La Graciosa can be reached by ferry from Orzola in Lanzarote. The journey takes about 30 minutes. Buy your ferry tickets in advance.

Most beautiful beaches

The beaches of La Graciosa not only offer spectacular views and excellent conditions for relaxation, but also the opportunity to discover the natural beauty of La Graciosa. Thanks to its remoteness and the low number of tourists, La Graciosa remains one of the places where you can find true peace.

Playa de las Conchas beach, in the north-west of the island, is one of the most popular beaches in La Graciosa. Its golden sands and clear waters create an unforgettable sight.

Playa Francesa is a great choice for families. Here you can enjoy snorkelling or just relaxing on the soft sand. This beach is located in the southern part of the island.

Playa de la Cocina is less crowded and ideal for those who want to get away from the masses. Playa de la Cocina is next to the famous green lagoon, El Laguito. The water here is exceptionally clear.

Playa de la Lambra is popular with locals and tourists.

La Graciosa, a tiny island in the Canary Islands – how to get around?

Graciosa is committed to preserving its unique landscape and biodiversity. The island has strict environmental regulations to protect its unique natural gifts. Transportation on the island is limited, and many visitors choose to cycle or walk to better experience the island’s beauty. Organised jeep safaris are also available.

Walking, especially with children, doesn’t get you very far, as it’s deserted and the beautiful beaches are far away. Except for a stroll around the town of Caleta de Sebo, where you can grab a bite to eat at the local fish restaurant.

If you’re travelling with children, don’t be tempted to go by bicycle as it’s cheaper. We saw parents with red faces pushing several bicycles and children with tears in their eyes walking alongside. The bicycle tour is suitable for those who are physically fit, as the roads on the island are unpaved and uneven.

We booked a great jeep tour and scored. We drove around the island, the driver-guide told us about the island and took us to the most beautiful beaches. And for the kids, there’s the fun of going off-road in a shaking jeep – no amusement rides needed.

Before we set sail, we also had time to eat at a local snack bar called Alegranza. A family-run bar, simple rustic local food, but for us it was very tasty after the excursion.
