In this article you will find some ideas on what you can bring back from Tenerife as a souvenir or a gift for your family and friends, or maybe even as a nice memory for yourself.

Souvenirs from Tenerife

Local food

  • Mojo sauces – red (mojo rojo) and green (mojo verde) – can be bought in small jars for souvenirs.
  • Honey (miel) – Tenerife has many unique flowers, so the honey has a different and unique taste.
  • Palm syrup – similar to honey, but also appreciated for its similarity to maple syrup.
  • Spices – you can find them in supermarkets and they are most welcome from our Lithuanian friends. The choice is wide, the packaging is top-notch, and we will tell you a secret: ‘adobo canario’ is our friends’ favourite.
  • Dried fruit – mangoes, figs, etc.
  • Cheeses. Tenerife produces high quality cheeses. The Canary Islands are the autonomous region that consumes the most cheese per person each year. Tenerife’s cheeses: goat’s cheese or mixed goat’s and sheep’s cheese. Smoked or cured cheeses will stand up well to the journey in your suitcase – just make sure you buy them laminated or, if you buy homemade at the market, pack them well so that the smell doesn’t get into your other belongings.
  • Platana (local bananas) produce: jams, wine, liqueur, sweets.
  • Products with almonds. Almendras Garrapiñadas – caramelised almonds, a popular snack and sweet in Spain and the Canary Islands.
  • Turrones. Although it is a sweet that is more associated with the Christmas period in Spain, in Tenerife you can also find this delicacy, which is made from almonds, honey and protein. This can be a great treat, especially if you are travelling in the run-up to the festive season.
  • Ham (Jamón Ibérico – this variety is of the highest quality and is more expensive because of its distinctive flavour, which is due to the pigs’ diet and the conditions in which they are reared; Jamón Serrano is the most common variety, made from white pigs). In Tenerife, Serrano ham is available in specialised delicatessen shops, local markets or large supermarkets.

Local drinks

  • Ron Miel. Honey rum is popular in Tenerife and other Canary Islands.
  • Tenerife wine. Tenerife has five appellations of origin and more than 100 wineries. The star is the Malvasia grape variety, which produces white wine.

Crafts and arts

  • Jewellery. Vulcan stone bracelets and other jewellery.
  • Tenerife pearls. Tenerife Pearl is a pearl centre where you can learn about the craft of pearling, buy pearl jewellery and even take part in educational tours. Tenerife Pearl’s shops offer a wide variety of pearls: freshwater pearls, sea pearls, etc.

What and how much can you take out of Tenerife by plane?

You often ask if there is a limit on the amount of goods you can take out if you travel by plane? In principle, as long as you take personal items and reasonable quantities, there are no major restrictions.

Basic rules:

  • Airline baggage and security restrictions. First of all, don’t forget the restrictions on hand luggage. Usually one piece of hand luggage per person is allowed, the weight and dimensions depend on the policy of the individual airline. Liquids in hand luggage should be packed in 100 ml containers, not exceeding a total volume of 1 litre, and placed in a transparent, zipped plastic bag.
  • Weight and size limits for checked-in baggage vary, but are generally set between 15 and 32 kg per piece of checked-in baggage.
  • Customs rules. EU citizens can bring in larger quantities of the following goods from another EU country for personal consumption without additional charges, e.g. spirits up to 10 litres (EU) – see the airport’s page for more information.
  • Foodstuffs – when buying packaged foodstuffs such as sweets, cheese or olive oil, there are usually no restrictions on transport between EU countries. However, some countries may have restrictions on certain types of products, so it is advisable to check in advance.
