Portugal with children – TOP 10 places to visit

Sintra or Pena Palace

Portugal with children is a wonderful destination with lots of places to visit. One of them is Sintra. We had plans to visit another palace in Sintra, but the kids often change our plans, so we hope to go back again. But the palace alone is already super impressive and worth a visit. If you want to avoid the queues, we recommend buying your tickets in advance.

Portugal with children – Sintra

Monsanto

Probably the most memorable place. Definitely something unique and we only met a couple of people which is our favourite thing. Only planning a coastal trip, I don’t know if it’s worth turning off the road so much, but from what we saw, this impressed us the most.

Cabo da Roca

The westernmost point of mainland Europe, close to Sintra. We did not expect this place to leave such an impression. We felt like another famous Portuguese explorer looking out at the ocean. The emotion as the sun sets is mesmerising.

Algar Seco

My favourite place in the Algarve. Those rocks seem to be beautiful everywhere, but here you can also climb a lot among them, and there’s also a nice wooden and quite long path to the photogenic town of Carvoeiro. Two birds with one stone.

Marinha Beach

What I liked most was not the beach itself, but the whole nature trail to the other famous landmark Benagil Cave (only from the top). There are boats from Lagos to Benagil Cave. Travel advice from travel 4 kids- CHOOSE TO SWIM WITH A SMALLER BOAT, ONLY SMALLER BOATS SWIM UNDER ARCHOS AND ALMOST ROCKS

Nazare

We dreamt of record waves, which we didn’t get to see, but we were still amazed by the tricks the terrain created. The waves that day were about 5 metres, which is not small either, and there was no wind. You can sit on the sand and enjoy the sound and the waves.

Piodao

A town made of shale and rubble. It’s a struggle to get there, but we’re fans of such places, so a ride with beautiful views is sometimes a pleasure. It was here that we realised how diverse Portugal is and that it’s not just beaches that it boasts. We will remember this small and romantic town among the mountains for a long time.

Lisbon

We’re not fans of cities, but out of the big cities, we liked the capital the best. Maybe it was because it was raining when we were in Porto, maybe it was because we were going there at the end of our trip, but Lisbon was a much more cosy and warmer city. It’s fun to walk around the city streets and there are many castles with amazing panoramic views.

Sagres

Or rather, the ocean shores, the cliffs around this town. It feels like you are on the edge of the world. Except that we were also fascinated by the porosity of the rocks, when you seem to be standing at the furthest edge, but there is a current of air whipping through some tiny gap under your feet, and the sound is so frightening that you have to quicken your pace before you fall in.

Porto

It’s a beautiful city. Just look from the second floor upwards, because there seemed to be a lot of unmaintained facades written all over the place. Because if the rain and tiredness didn’t spoil the memories, it would be even more impressive on a beautiful day. If you’re caught in the weather, the city is full of galleries and museums that are fun to visit with older children.

Recommendations from travel 4 kids:

  • Buy the Lisbon Card, valid for 24, 48 or 72 hours. Very useful, lots of free museums, attractions.
  • As always, the Lisbon Hop-On Hop-Off buses are very useful, especially if you don’t have a lot of time and want to see a lot. Trams and funiculars – just riding these historic vehicles will not leave anyone indifferent
