Lanzarote with Children

“Traveling with children®” shares useful tips and information about places to visit with children in the Canary Islands.

Lanzarote is the fourth largest island in the Canary Islands, which is perfect for holidays with children all year round. The island of Lanzarote is not big, so it’s perfect for traveling with children who don’t get bored on the spot. Jolita, one of the founders of “Traveling with children ®”, has prepared a detailed information guide for you on what to visit, where to have fun and what to see on the island of Lanzarote. And along with the island of Lanzarote, we highly recommend visiting the exotic dwarf Canary Island. Find all our tips below.

Lanzarote, one of the Canary Islands, stands out for its unique volcanic landscape, enchanting beaches and warm Atlantic climate. We always remember it as a small island with the most beautiful colored mountains and rocks.

Lanzarote with children – when to travel?

We love Lanzarote very much and have traveled there with our children twice already – once in winter and the other in summer. And both times it was very good. Of course it was colder in the winter and there were rainy days. During the summer, it was very good – the wind characteristic of the islands was refreshing, and the heat was enough for all the entertainment.

Lanzarote, like the other Canary Islands, is suitable to visit at any time of the year. The summer months (June-August) are warmer and drier, but also the peak tourist season. The winter months (December-February) are mild in Lanzarote and it’s a good time to get out of the winter to warm up.

Rancho Texas Lanzarote Zoo

We visited this zoo when Oskar and Greta were very small and we didn’t realize that a few hours would not be enough. However, we were lucky enough to be offered a free return visit the next day when we arrived just a few hours before closing time. Thus, we visited this park for two days, so we did not repeat it the second time we visited.

It is not only a zoo, but also a water park. And there are also various performances of eagles, sea lions, dolphins and exotic birds. Therefore, if you are traveling with children, dedicate a whole day to this park.

Buy tickets in advance and you won’t have to waste time in queues.

Lanzarote Aquarium

A small aquarium, a visit will take up to a few hours. 33 aquariums where you can observe hundreds of marine species.

The aquarium exhibits typical Canarian species such as turtles, clown fish and hermit crabs. You can also admire various sharks, rays and other largest fish from the underwater tunnel. After that, the Poem aquarium in Gran Canaria and the most impressive aquarium in Barcelona was not so impressive, but if you have half a day to spare – make sure to stop by.

You can buy tickets in advance.

Aqua Lava water park

A small water park with slides, a rapids river and the only saltwater wave pool in Lanzarote. The water in the pools is heated.

In the water park you will also find cafes where you can refresh yourself and have a snack.

What to bring: bathing suits, towels, sun cream.

Buy water park tickets conveniently online.

Sailing on a submarine

Dive to a depth of 30 meters and explore the ocean floor. Feel comfortable in a cabin that maintains normal atmospheric conditions, so pregnant women and those with heart or ear problems will not be affected. And children usually feel comfortable in it.

Choose a tour at a time that suits you and reserve your seats in advance.

Underwater walk

Sea walk is an innovative system that allows you to walk under water. It consists of a helmet with a panoramic view and a small boat on the surface that contains your canister connected to the helmet.

This new experience will make you feel like you are walking on the moon in zero gravity. You will be surrounded by amazing marine life and will be able to get up close to different types of fish and underwater creatures.

Make sure to book this experience online.

Surfing at Famara Beach

If you and your children are interested in learning to surf or at least trying it – spend the day in Caleta de Famara town and beach. After swimming in the waves and surfing lessons, be sure to visit one of the local fish restaurants.

You can book lessons for children.

  1. Playa Blanca. This beach is suitable for families as it has calm waters and a sandy shore. The beach also has facilities (toilets and showers).
  2. Playa de Papagayo. Known for its stunning sand dunes and crystal clear water.
  3. Costa Teguise beaches. Playa de las Cucharas, are perfect for families.

  5. Playa de Famara. We have already mentioned. Famara is popular with surfers but is also suitable for families thanks to its wide sandy beaches. It is important to pay attention to the strength of the waves and water currents.

Avoid the sun and remember to use sunscreen, especially for children, and reapply regularly.

Places to visit with children in Lanzarote

Practical advice: if you plan to visit all the places listed here (Montañas del Fuego (Timanfaya), Jameos del Agua, Cueva de los Verdes, Mirador del Río) and a few additional ones (like Jardín de Cactus, MIAC Castillo de San José, Casa-Museo del Campesino/ House of the Farmers’ Museum) is highly recommended you purchase the CACT ticket, the price of which includes all tickets to the mentioned objects.

Timanfaya National Park

An extraordinary experience and an unreal park that your children will surely like. Excursions around the park and, of course, seeing the craters will be interesting for children. Be sure to try experiments with geothermal energy, learning how geothermal energy works – make sure to prepare a video setting on your phone.

You can drive your own car, and after leaving your car in the park’s parking lot, you can travel around the park by bus. Self-driving around the park is prohibited. Alternatively, you can purchase an organized excursion, then you will avoid the queues at the entrance to the park. We were lucky – we wasted less than an hour in line because the national park information center advised us to go in the afternoon.

Timanfaya National Park Information Center

Make sure to stop by! Admission is free, and visitors to the center can learn about the history of volcanic activity, the park’s ecosystems and protected areas. The center has educational exhibits that provide information about volcanoes and their effects on the island’s ecology.

Jameos del Agua cave and museum

Jameos del Agua – one of the most impressive and unique works of nature and art, created by the famous Spanish artist César Manrique. Jameos del Agua was formed by a partially collapsed underground lava tunnel, which is part of the same tunnel system that also includes Cueva de los Verdes. Jameos del Agua is an exceptional area where you can see natural volcanic caves converted into a magical space with lakes, plants, restaurants and a concert hall.

The main attraction of Jameos del Agua for children is a small, clear natural lake that is home to rare albino crustaceans. These little animals are almost transparent. Make sure to take a look and see the crabs glowing in the water. These crabs belong to a species called Munidopsis polymorpha, which are small, about 1 cm in size. They are unique in their lack of pigmentation, which gives them a white or almost transparent appearance, and are often referred to as albino crabs.

By the way, there is a cafe and even a restaurant where you can order dinner in an exclusive space.

Inexpensive tickets online.

Cueva de los verdes

Cueva de los Verdes is one part of a huge underground lava tunnel that was formed about 5,000 years ago after the eruption of the La Corona volcano. This underground lava tunnel, which is one of the longest in the world, is an incredible geological phenomenon. The tunnel was formed when the lava on the surface solidified and the hotter lava that flowed beneath it formed into the tunnel structure. Cueva de los Verdes is an accessible part of this tunnel, which stretches for about 6 kilometers to the Atlantic Ocean.

The tunnel features impressive lava wall formations, stalactites and stalagmites, as well as unique acoustics, which are sometimes used for concerts and events.

Cueva de los Verdes is not only a natural wonder, but also a place where art and nature come together. This tunnel was adapted for visitors according to the ideas of the famous architect and artist César Manrique, who sought to highlight and complement the natural beauty in non-invasive ways. The result is not only a geological, but also a visual masterpiece.

Important: comfortable shoes are recommended. Temperatures can be cooler in the dungeons, so bring warm clothing. Although this is a fun experience for children, it is important to supervise them as some parts of the tunnel can be wet or uneven.

Mirador del Rio

Located in the northern part of Lanzarote, Mirador del Rio is one of the island’s most impressive viewpoints, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and the neighboring island of La Graciosa. This place is another example of the legacy of the famous artist and architect César Manrique. Here you will also find a cafe and a souvenir shop.

Green Lake

The green lake known as “El Charco de los Clicos” is one of the most unique natural wonders in Lanzarote, Canary Islands. Located in the region of Los Hervideros, near the town of El Golfo, this lake is known for its bright green color, which contrasts sharply with the blackness of the surrounding volcanic sand and the blue hues of the Atlantic Ocean.

The color of the lake is due to the high chlorophyll content of the algal microorganisms present in it. This gives the lake its bright green hue. The trip to the lake is quite easy and there are many places around where you can leave your car. Access to the observation deck is accessible on foot and is free. With small children, we recommend having a baby carrier, even though the road is not far. The lake is especially beautiful on a sunny day, when its green color is most vivid.

La Graciosa Island

We highly recommend sailing to the smallest but inhabited Canary Island which is very close by. We felt like we had fallen into the local Caribbean. La Graciosa stands out for its pristine sandy beaches and crystal clear water. The most popular beaches are Playa de las Conchas, Playa de la Cocina and Playa de la Francesa, which are known for their golden sand and calm waters. These beaches are ideal for relaxing, sunbathing and snorkeling.

La Graciosa can be reached by ferry from the town of Orzola in Lanzarote. The trip takes about 30 minutes. Buy ferry tickets here.

You can travel around the island on foot, by bicycle or book a jeep safari.

You won’t go far on foot, because the desert is around, it’s far from the beautiful beaches, so unless you walk around the town of Caleta de Sebo, you’ll sit down at a local fish restaurant.

If you’re traveling with kids, don’t be tempted to use bicycles because it’s cheaper. We saw parents with red faces pushing several bicycles and children with tears in their eyes walking next to them. Excursion with bicycles is suitable for those who are really physically fit, as the roads on the island are unpaved and uneven.

We booked a great jeep tour and we won. We went around the island, the driver – guide told us about the island, took us to the most beautiful beaches. And where else is it fun for children to drive off-road with a shaking jeep – you won’t even need attractions.

Before sailing, we had time to eat at a local restaurant. A true paradise!

Where to eat deliciously?

  • La Carmencita del Puerto (restaurant in Puerto del Carmen) – known for its friendly service and delicious dishes suitable for the whole family.
  • Alegranza (on the island of La Graciosa) is a family bar on the island of La Graciosa. Local simple country food, but it was delicious for us after the tour.
  • Mirador de los valles (a restaurant found somewhere along the way, Teguise) is a complete discovery for us. we recommend tasting shrimps with champignons and eating meat steaks.
  • Restaurante (in SOL Famara town) – a fish restaurant with a view of the ocean and the nearby beach. Seasonal restaurant, make sure to check if it is open.
  • Casa el pescador casa Barriguita (at Green Lake) – another discovery of ours. Very good food, excellent service. We certainly didn’t expect to find one in a small town, but we were very happy with the choice.
