Hair loss: what to do

During and after childbirth, a woman’s body undergoes so many changes and hormonal storms that it often takes a long time to rebalance the body. Perhaps the strongest response to the changes is in the mother’s hair and scalp – from shiny, thick hair during pregnancy to hair that falls out after giving birth. Why does this happen? What can we use to stop excess hair loss and provide comfort to a sensitive scalp? What to do when dealing with hear loss?

Most women enjoy healthy, thick hair during pregnancy, so the loss that follows can be a real scare for young mothers. However, it should be known that this process is natural. But what to do when you are experiencing hair loss and what measures to take? Find the answers in this article.

Hair loss: what to do when your hair is falling out after childbirth

Facts about hair loss

During pregnancy, due to the effects of oestrogen, the hair is in the growth phase longer than normal, resulting in less hair loss. After the baby is born, the hormone balance returns to its previous state, the estrogen levels decrease and the hair returns to its normal growth cycle. A large proportion of the hair then immediately goes into a dormant phase and your hair is falling out, which can make it appear that the hair is falling out much more, or even that there is a really serious illness – but in fact it is simply the hair that didn’t fall out during pregnancy that is falling out. But many people wonder about what to do when your hair is falling out.

Another fact worth noting is that women who have given birth are more stressed, sleep less, suffer from constant fatigue and, if they are breastfeeding, continue to be deficient in the minerals and vitamins they need, so that their hair falls out more quickly than usual and in greater quantities.

Experts say it’s pointless to fight postpartum hair loss, as it’s a natural and inevitable process that helps our bodies to renew themselves. So whether you spend hundreds of euros on ointments, sprays and other products or just wait until the shedding process is over, the hair that should fall out will fall out.

How long can it last?

Hair loss is usually strongest 4 months after childbirth, but a little more loss can be observed earlier, e.g. 2 months after childbirth.

Usually, this loss lasts for a short period of time – around 2 months, and less often up to 6 months.

But there is good news – hair grows back by your child’s first birthday. After the awkward phase comes relief as a new ‘hedgehog’ starts to emerge – because usually after childbirth, the hair falls out around the forehead and ears, and then grows new “antennas” there too.

What can help when your hair is falling out?

  • It is important to have tests a couple of months after giving birth (and regularly thereafter) to monitor your blood iron levels. If you notice a deficiency of vitamin D and other vitamins or trace elements, replenish your body as soon as possible with the necessary nutrients. If blood or thyroid tests are not a cause for concern, there is no need to be too distracted or stressed. Let any hair that did not fall out during pregnancy fall out.
  • It is better to brush your hair several times a day, with regular brushing. It’s also a good idea to brush your hair before washing it. That way you won’t get the shock of seeing clumps of hair in the bath.
  • If you’re really puzzled by the appearance of a bald scalp, you can try a masking powder or other products that give a light tint and a good optical appearance.
  • Even though it’s natural for hair to fall out, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take care of it. On the contrary! Use quality hair products that will wake up the scalp when the time comes and help new hair grow back faster. Pamper your hair with oils, masks and serums to keep it looking happy and well-groomed.

When should you be worried about hair loss?

  • If hair loss persists for more than a couple of months. Also if the hair is becoming very thin and starting to break, you should consult your doctor. There may be other causes.
  • If the hair loss persists for more than a year and is very intense, it may be difficult to control it at home alone. So you should seek additional measures prescribed by a doctor. During an examination, your doctor will carry out diagnostic tests, look at your hair and scalp with a dermatoscope, and may advise you on blood tests. We also recommend that you have a hair health check. You can do it for free at a physical pharmacy “Eurovaistinė” by making a reservation in advance.
  • It is worth worrying if, in addition to increased hair loss, other symptoms such as burning of the scalp, severe itching, severe redness of the scalp, scaly rashes or areas of shedding occur. These and similar symptoms may signal provoked diseases.
