Fuerteventura with children

“Travel 4 kids®” shares with you useful tips and information about places to visit with children in the Canary Islands.

Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands. From stunning beaches to exciting attractions, this island has more than just relaxation to offer, but also adventure for the whole family. We have visited Fuerteventura with our children several times and in different seasons, and still, in our opinion, it is better to visit it in the summer, because during the winter it is one of the coldest and poorest looking Canary Islands. When we visited the island in the summer, we rediscovered it and loved it!

When is the best time to travel to Fuerteventura with kids?

Summer in Fuerteventura is pleasant, sometimes the temperature can rise as low as 30°C. In addition, the name of the island already says that it is a strong windy island, so the breeze is really refreshing. However, summer is also the tourist season, so some places can be quite crowded, but we didn’t feel that. The roads are empty, no queues at tourist attractions.

Winter in Fuerteventura is mild, with temperatures around 18°C - 22°C. While it can be great for traveling, it can be far too cool for sunbathing and swimming in the ocean.

Entertainment in Fuerteventura with children

Oasis Park Fuerteventura

It is a zoo and a botanical garden. It is home to many animals. Occupying more than 800,000 square meters, the park is home to more than 3,000 animals and thousands of plant species.

Here you will see giraffes, elephants and camels. In the park you can also visit animal shows (parrots, sea lions and reptiles) – included in the price. And where else is the opportunity to feed giraffes for children. This attraction was incredible for us and to this day, when we visit zoological gardens and see giraffes there, the kids ask if they can feed them. You only need to pay for giraffes food.

The show with parrots and reptiles was probably one of the most chaotic but also the most memorable shows we have ever seen. Definitely don’t miss it.

In the park area, there are several dining options where you can relax and enjoy a meal. Here you will also find souvenir shops where you can buy souvenirs. The park is family-friendly, equipped with amenities such as children’s playgrounds and relaxation areas.

This is one of the best and most beautiful zoological gardens we have visited.

Buy tickets in advance – you won’t have to stand in lines.

Acua Water Park

Located in Corralejo, this water park is a great option on a hot day. There are water attractions, a pool for children.

Sailing and water sports with children

Fuerteventura is known for its excellent sailing conditions. Families can try windsurfing, kitesurfing or surfing.

Dolphin watching tours

Many options and possibilities:

  • Sailing on a pirate ship –  is probably the most suitable sailing with children. Not only will you have the opportunity to see dolphins, but you will learn how to raise sails, tie nautical knots and maneuver the boat. Many games and surprises during the tour, and you can also try various water activities, such as swinging from the side of the ship or playing in the pool next to it. A buffet lunch awaits at noon. Pedra Sartañ is one of the last cargo ships in northern Spain and one of the few that still holds the blue flag, which gives you the right to watch whales and dolphins. If you’re lucky, you might see dolphins, whales and turtles during your cruise.
  • Sailing with a boat with glass windows in the hull. Make yourself comfortable in front of the windows so you don’t miss anything that happens in the underwater world.
  • Dolphin and Whale Watching Day Trip from Morro Jable Harbor.
  • Excursion on the ship “Zodiac”.

Museums in Fuerteventura with children

Cheese Museum (Museo del Queso Majorero)

Fuerteventura has a cheese museum called the Museo del Queso Majorero, which is an ideal place for those who want to learn more about the island’s cheese-making traditions. Located in the town of Antigua in the central part of Fuerteventura, this museum is a great place to visit, especially if you are interested in the local gastronomy. We really liked it!

In the museum, visitors can see various expositions, which include:

  • Cheese production tools and technologies.

Salt Museum (Salt Museum Salinas del Carmen)

Fuerteventura has an interesting place called Salinas del Carmen, a salt museum and old salt fields that have been in operation since 1910. The museum is located on the seafront, near Caleta de Fuste.

This museum is a great place to learn about the island’s salt mining history. Children will be interested to see how salt is obtained from sea water.
Salt extraction here is carried out using ancient methods, where seawater is naturally evaporated with the help of the sun and wind, leaving crystallized salt.

The museum offers interactive exhibitions where you can learn about the process of salt production, its importance in history, trade and people’s daily lives. Visitors can see how the salt is collected, dried and prepared before it goes to market. In addition, the museum displays tools used in salt production throughout the ages.

The museum is located in an old mill that has been restored and adapted for visitors. Places to visit in Fuerteventura with children

Corralejo

One of the most famous and popular cities in Fuerteventura, it stands out for its excellent beach areas, entertainment and lively atmosphere. The city is located on the northeast coast.

Corralejo has some of the best beaches on the island, including Corralejo Viejo and Grandes Playas. These sandy beaches with gentle waves and clear water are ideal for sun worshipers and water sports enthusiasts.

The city is full of bars, restaurants and clubs.

From here, you can also reach the uninhabited island of Lobos by ferry.

Lobos Island

Isla de Lobos is a small island with an area of about 4.5 square kilometers, located between Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, belonging to the Canary Islands archipelago. Lobos Island is about 2 kilometers from Fuerteventura’s town of Corralejo and is a very popular tourist destination for its natural beauty and tranquility.

Lobos Island is a nature reserve that was established in 1982 to protect its untouched nature.

The island has no permanent residents and its visit is regulated to protect nature. Tourists need a permit, which can be obtained online or at the Corralejo Tourist Information Center. Trips to Lobos Island are organized by various tour companies that offer day trips from Corralejo. Trips usually last a few hours, but it is possible to spend the whole day exploring the nature of the island.

You can purchase both the transfer and the visit permit, then sail and enjoy your time on the island right away.

A variety of hiking trails lead through the island, so it will appeal to those who like to travel on foot.

Thanks to the clear and clean water, you can also snorkel here.

What to see in Lobos Island

One of the most visited places on Lobos Island is El Puertito – a small and charming harbor with a sandy beach and turquoise water, which is a popular vacation spot. It is also worth visiting the island’s lighthouse, Faro de Martiño, which has stood here since 1865. Before the lighthouse was automated, it was home to a family that looked after it, the last inhabitants of Lobos Island.

Our advice – if you plan to spend more time walking across the island on the trails – take enough water and snacks with you. There is a restaurant on the island, but there are always very long queues.

The lighthouse FARO DEL TOSTÓN and the town of El Cotillo

Faro del Tostón is a famous lighthouse located in the town of El Cotillo, on the northwest coast of Fuerteventura. This lighthouse is an important navigational point as well as a popular tourist attraction. Faro del Tostón was built in 1897 and is one of the oldest lighthouses on the island.

The lighthouse is open to visitors and there is a small display dedicated to the history of the lighthouse and local fishing. In addition, the lighthouse offers a breathtaking panorama, so it is often visited by both locals and tourists who want to admire the sunsets or just be surrounded by nature.

In the town you will also find colorful sculptures of local fish, which the children really liked.

El Cotillo is a small fishing town that has recently become popular with tourists for its tranquility, beautiful beaches and authentic Canarian lifestyle.

We really regret that we didn’t ask our friends who recommended us to reserve at least a few nights in this town. Next time, when we return to Fuerteventura, we will definitely look for a place to stay here.

Ajuy

Ajuy is a small fishing village on the west coast of Fuerteventura. Although this village may appear quiet and unremarkable, it has a rich history and geological importance that attracts tourists from all over the world.

Ajuy is known for its old limestone quarries, which were previously used for local construction. More importantly, this place is historically important as one of the first places where European sailors landed in the Canary Islands. It was used as a natural harbor where ships could dock safely.

One of the main attractions is the Ajuy Caves, accessible on foot via the beautiful paths that run along the coast.

Gran Tarajal

Gran Tarajal is a smaller town in the southeastern part of the island of Fuerteventura. Quiet and authentic, Gran Tarajal is less visited by tourists, so you can experience authentic local life here. The town is quiet and friendly, perfect for families looking for a quieter environment.
Gran Tarajal Beach is long and wide with a black sand shore. The town has shops, restaurants, cafes and children’s playgrounds.

Chipmunks or squirrels

These are Barbary squirrels from the mountains of Morocco, which are an invasive species and are classified as pests and parasites. In 1965 someone brought a pair of Barbary squirrels to Fuerteventura as pets. After the female escaped, he decided to release the male, and now there are more than a million of them on the island. This is now a huge problem as they have no natural predators on the island and compete for the same resources as Fuerteventura’s native species.

They are great fun for children to watch, but you should also be aware that they carry many diseases and the island authorities have put up signs all over the island in known “squirrel” areas warning people not to feed the squirrels, and some local authorities issue fines to offenders. So, they are cute but dangerous to people and the environment.

We observed many of them in more than one mountain area. And you will understand that this is exactly the place when you see a special sign.

Sail to Lanzarote

If you are on a longer vacation, it is a good idea to see even several islands at once. Lanzarote is very close to Fuerteventura, less than an hour by ferry.
Lanzarote is not a big island – you can definitely see the most interesting places in one or several days. Our detailed guide Lanzarote with children will help you choose places to visit.

We highly recommend Timanfaya Park, there is no other experience like this in the Canary Islands. If you want, you can also travel with an organized excursion.

You will find a good price for the ferry to and from Lanzarote in our partner system.

Lagoons and beaches in Fuerteventura with children

Corralejo

The long white sandy beach is a great choice for those who enjoy water sports, including windsurfing and kitesurfing.

Sotavento

The beach is known for its giant lagoon that emerges at high tide, making it an ideal spot for beginners in water sports. Sotavento also hosts world-class surfing and kiteboarding competitions.

Cofet

The rugged and wild beach is located on the south coast of Fuerteventura. This is a secluded beach perfect for those looking for peace and seclusion.

El Cotillo

The beach is famous for its calm lagoons and clean sand, ideal for families with children. El Cotillo offers safe swimming and great sunsets.

Pop Corn Beach

Also known as Playa de los Charcos, is one of Fuerteventura’s most unique beaches, located in the northeastern part of the island, near the town of Corralejo. This beach is special because of its unusual composition of sand, which is not actually sand, but small pieces of white coral that look like popcorn – hence the name.

Although Pop Corn Beach is a charming and unique place, tourists are encouraged to act responsibly. It is important not to take pieces of coral with you as souvenirs, as this can harm the natural environment and the preservation of the beach.

La Pared beach

La Pared Beach, on Fuerteventura’s southwest coast, is known for its ruggedness. This beach is named after the nearby town of La Pared, which means “the wall” in Spanish. This name symbolizes high and steep cliffs.

We came here for sunset and it was a very spectacular sight.

La Pared beach is popular with surfing enthusiasts due to its strong waves and wind conditions, which are ideal for this sport. It should be noted that swimming at La Pared beach can be dangerous due to strong currents and waves, especially if you are not an experienced swimmer.

Resorts for holidays with children in Fuerteventura

The resort of Corralejo in the north is known for its sand dunes and wide beaches. It also has many kid-friendly attractions such as water parks, mini golf courses and other attractions.

Caleta de Fuste, a resort on the east coast, is one of the most popular with families. There are calm beaches, ideal for small children. There are also several playgrounds for children.

The resort of Costa Calma in the south is known for its long sandy beach, which is a great place for families with children.

The resort of Morro Jable in the south offers long promenades, perfect for walking with children. There are many family-friendly restaurants and cafes, as well as water sports and entertainment options. We also chose this resort for the beginning and end of our vacation with AI hotels.
El Cotillo resort, as I wrote, is smaller, but cozy and I think it’s a great choice for families with small children. It also has beautiful beaches and excellent local restaurants.

Where to live with children in Fuerteventura?

We tried several methods. From villas with pools to AI hotels. Since the island is loved by Germans, the services everywhere are quite high-level, the accommodation is well equipped and relatively inexpensive, if compared to the prices of Tenerife.

There are many hotels in Fuerteventura that offer facilities for families, including children’s pools, kids’ clubs and adapted family rooms.

We also tested several AI hotels:

We liked the hotel, but I missed the order in the common areas, in the restaurant – after all, it is a Spanish hotel chain and it is evident in these things.

But the price was very good, we paid only 160 euros per day for 4 four persons with a special room suitable for children and the AI package. As summer is the season in Fuerteventura, the price was very attractive.

  • Although less suitable for children, we really liked the hotel Fergus Cactus Garden, with very tasty food, amazing views from the roof terrace and the jacuzzi on it.

Where and what to eat in Fuerteventura – our recommendations

Fuerteventura has many restaurants offering both local and international cuisine. Many restaurants have kid-friendly menus. It is worth trying the local cuisine, including fish and seafood dishes.

Our tested and recommended:

  • Casa Santa Maria Betancuria – in the old town, a restaurant with an exclusive interior and really good food.
  • La Falua La Lajita – Polish owned when we visited and the food was very good.
  • El Moral Villaverde La Oliva
