Christmas in Warsaw

Christmas markets are a popular tradition in many European cities, including Warsaw, the capital of Poland. Christmas in Warsaw is a great idea for anyone who wants to have fun and see a beautifully decorated city. Christmas in Warsaw really surprised our whole family this year and we are already planning next year’s trip. So if you can’t make it this year, we highly recommend planning a trip for next year.

Christmas in Warsaw

The Christmas markets in Warsaw start to open and the city gets all decked out from late November/early December, so you can plan your Christmas trip throughout December. Christmas in Warsaw is really wonderful, with a charmingly decorated city, lots of events and plenty of entertainment for children. And in our opinion, Christmas in Warsaw is definitely not inferior to the most interesting Christmas fairs in Europe.

Christmas in Warsaw – why it’s worth visiting

Warsaw is really beautifully decorated and the whole city is in a festive mood. For us, this year’s Christmas in Warsaw was reminiscent of the German Christmas markets, so it’s nice that you don’t have to go very far to get into the true Christmas spirit. We also really found the entertainment, food and drinks at the fairs much cheaper than in Lithuania. In comparison, it costs 8.39 euros to skate on the ice rink at the Palace of the Grand Dukes in Vilnius. An hour of ice skating in Warsaw’s Old Town Square costs 10 zlotys (about €2.5) By the way, this is the price of renting ice skates, as the rink itself is free. Hot wine at the fairs in Warsaw also costs around 10 zlotys (around €2.5).

So in our opinion, Warsaw is not only more festive, very impressive and beautifully decorated, but also considerably cheaper than Vilnius at Christmas.

Christmas markets in Warsaw

There are a lot of Christmas fairs in Warsaw, but we didn’t manage to visit them all. We liked the Christmas market in the Old Town (near the Royal Castle and the Barbican (Podwale Street)) and the one in the main square of the Old Town (Rynek Starego Miasta) the best. The Old Town is very beautifully decorated, with a wide variety of shops and food stalls and music. At the fairs you can find hot drinks such as spiced wine or hot apple juice. There are also ginger biscuits, honey cakes and a variety of goodies.

Ice rinks in Warsaw

This year we were very pleasantly surprised by the number of ice rinks in many parts of the city. We liked the rink in the main square of the Old Town (Rynek Starego Miasta) the most.

Another very festive rink is located in front of the Palace of Culture and Science (on the Świętokrzyska Street side). But unlike the skating rink in the main square of the Old Town, where skates cost 10 zloty, here the price is 50 zloty.

You can also find a skating rink at the Westfield Arkadia shopping centre or in different areas of the city (Białołęka, Ursus or Wesoła).

We highly recommend a walk along Nowy Świat Street, which takes you to the Royal Palace and the Old Town. During the festive period, this street is very decorated and becomes a pedestrian promenade. Nowy Świat Street is where old meets modern. From the Old Town, this street takes you to a part of Warsaw with some of the best shopping, cafés and bars.

And we always recommend a day at the Suntago Water Park when traveling and staying in Warsaw.

Where to eat in Warsaw

Food Hall Browary – here you’ll find food for all tastes, from pizzas to Thai cuisine to Spanish snacks. The place is spacious, has a cosy patio, plenty of tables inside and high chairs for children. We also really like Bar Koszyki. It’s like a very big food market. It is a very popular place.

Podwale 25. This is a very large German-style restaurant in Warsaw’s Old Town, right next to the city’s defensive wall. If you like Bavarian-style restarans, German sausages – you will love this restaurant as much as we do. It’s also home to some very tasty locally brewed beer. The portions are very large and the food is really tasty. The owners of Podwale 25 also have a restaurant called U Szwejka. A themed restaurant with large portions of food.
