When Lithuanian Railways shared the news of new international train routes, we were overjoyed. Before, we used to travel to neighbouring countries only by plane or car. But now we can do it much more easily. Travelling by train with children is very convenient. You don’t have to concentrate on the road, you have more space and can always go to the toilet or get a snack. And the tickets are cheaper than travelling by plane. These new routes offered a great opportunity for vintage car fans. Because a train journey connected two museums, one in Lithuania and one in the capital of Latvia.

Tourists often try to visit the Baltic States in one visit. Why not try a short cultural holiday this year, using the convenient Vilnius-Riga-Vilnius train route? – Jolanta Masiulienė, Marketing Manager of Vilnius Automuseum, suggests the idea of an adventurous stay. – Vilnius and Riga Automobile Museum share a beautiful friendship. We exchange visitors, experiences and stories. Although the brothers’ museum is 29 years older than ours, both cultural institutions are of the same size in terms of space (over 4,500 m2) and the number of exhibits – we present over 100 different vehicles each.”

Near the centre of the capital, this almost ten-year-old museum houses the largest and most modern collection of vintage vehicles in the Baltic States. The museum’s exhibition is a fascinating interactive narrative about unique vehicles, famous people and significant events in the history of the automotive industry, complemented by modern multimedia technology. The museum is by no means small, with more than 100 unique cars, motorcycles and bicycles on three floors of the building.

And then there’s the Lithuanian museum, which opened just over a year ago. This museum in the capital is the first in Lithuania dedicated to the cultural heritage of motoring. Although the museum is new and modern, it is not inferior to the Riga Museum in terms of the size of the exhibition and the quality of the exhibits. “We have been working on the idea of a car museum for years. The most important task for us was to prepare a really high level exhibition that we could be proud of, that would create value for the public and that would impress car enthusiasts even from other countries.” – Says Museum Director P.Eitutis.

International route to the Latvian capital popular in the warm season

Modesta Gusarovienė, Business Development and Marketing Manager at passenger transport company LTG Link, says that the number of train passengers jumps significantly during the warm season.

“Spring and summer are the busiest times for train travel. Our data shows that. While in the cold season it is usually the fairly regular customers who travel by train, in the summer it is also those who may not use trains as a daily means of transport. In the warm season, the number of train passengers increases by 22%”, says Gusarovienė. The largest number of train passengers to Riga comes from Vilnius – around 63%. Every 12th train passenger comes from Kaišiadorys. And around 7% of passengers travel to Riga from Joniškis. The international route is popular with families and young people – around 10% of passengers are children and schoolchildren. Business customers also use the route, accounting for 4% of passengers on the Vilnius-Riga route.
