We’ve probably all been in the situation where you plan a long holiday with your family, but when you arrive at the main location, the weather is very bad. And many of the places you thought you’d visit are out of the question. Especially with children, who don’t enjoy long walks around the city in the rain and strong winds. When the weather at the seaside is so changeable, this scenario comes true quite often. And then the question arises – What Lithuanian seaside activities in bad weather could we try out?

Although one of the main plans when you arrive at the seaside in summer is to splash in the waves and take a leisurely stroll in town, or eat a large portion of ice cream, when the weather changes, don’t be in a hurry to head home. Because there are plenty of family-friendly activities to do indoors. Here’s a list of ideas for Lithuanian seaside activities in bad weather.

Palanga Summer Park

Palanga Summer Park is the largest trampoline park in Lithuania. Located in the very heart of Palanga, next to the Melt in Palanga hotel.

The complex has a huge trampoline park, with basketball hoops and trampolines that can push a person up to a height of 6 metres.

There are activities for both children and adults. While the kids are having fun on the trampolines, on the Ninja Warrior obstacle course or on the three-storey playground, parents can sit back on the beanbags and surf the internet or try mini-golf. For the more extreme adventurers, there is a rope trail in the trees. It is probably the nearest one to the sea in Lithuania. You can also swing on the carousel or race on the Italian car track.

There are plenty of cafés, relaxation areas and a massage parlour, so you won’t be bored. Entrance to the park is free, only the attractions are chargeable.

Children’s Park

If you’re travelling with little ones, this park is a must. Located at the intersection of Naglis Avenue and Sermuksniai Street, the play park offers free entertainment for the little ones. Colourful sea-themed play equipment up to 7 metres high, a variety of climbing frames, swings and carousels for children of all ages. The area is fenced off, with surveillance cameras and lights. Perfect for a quiet time with the children when it’s windy or cold by the sea.

Pramogenai

Children’s entertainment space PRAMOGENAI and Elf’s Land is a children’s adventure place in Zibininkai, in the entertainment complex HBH Palanga. It is a large, two-storey play area for children of all ages. First of all, it’s a paradise of balls – we’ve probably never seen so many of them anywhere. There are various ball pools, tunnels, machines that blow balls into the air, and ball shooting ranges. There are also various staircases and ramps, a virtual games area, mazes where you can play hide and seek. Activities for the younger ones are also available. Such as mini slides, ride on cars, soft building blocks and balance toys. As in many play areas, you can celebrate birthdays, graduations and other children’s parties here.

Klaipeda swimming pool

If you’re staying in Klaipeda on your seaside holiday and the kids are upset about the bad weather and can’t try on their new swimsuits, the Klaipeda pool is a great option. It’s just a short walk from the ferry to Smiltyne. As well as the pool, which offers various group training sessions, there is a sauna area. But we predict that children will most enjoy the water challenge trail, where they can try to overcome floating obstacles and race against their peers.

Radailiai Manor Spa

A little further away from the sea, in Radailiai, Klaipėda district, next to Dino Park, you will find the Radailiai Manor complex. In here, you can also enjoy water activities. The name suggests that there are relaxing spa treatments for parents to enjoy – massages, wraps, body scrubs and more – and the choice is wide. In bad weather, a soak in the jacuzzi or a cup of tea on the heated benches after a swim is a treat. We’ve been here more than once during our family trips. So we can definitely recommend it. Nearby you will also find another fun attraction – the upside down house.

When the weather is bad, you can buy an all-day ticket and go for a meal or a nap after playing, and come back for more fun in the evening. The cost is really low and there is no extra charge for parents accompanying their children.

Upside down house in Radailiai

The upside down house is a unique indoor activity that children will love. In a real-sized house, all the rooms are upside down – a great opportunity to introduce children to physics and the concept of gravity – why, in reality, a bed is not stuck to the ceiling and doesn’t float in the air, but simply sits on the ground.

Recently, the upside-down house has added another new feature – 3D drawings. I have seen a lot of these when travelling abroad, but they are still quite rare in Lithuania. 3D drawings are mostly used to create optical illusions. I think you’ve seen photos on social media where it looks like a person is standing on the edge of the world. Now you can see and experience it for yourself at the Upside-Down House.

House of Illusions EUREKA

And if your children like 3D drawings and illusions – in Palanga, on the main Basanavicias street, there is a House of Illusions. Here you will find many interesting and interactive exhibits. A rotating tunnel, curved mirrors, a room where if you stand at one end you look super small and at the other end you look very big. You can take a fun photo of the children looking taller than their parents. A very entertaining and even educational place not only for children but also for parents.

Amber Museum

In Palanga, in the Count Tiskevicius Palace, between Birute Hill and Birute Park, there is a museum of amber. It has become so important and symbolic for Lithuania. There are not many amber museums in the world. And this collection of the Palanga Amber Museum is one of the most important and largest in the WORLD. Here you will see about 5 000 exhibits – amber of various sizes, shapes, colours and inclusions (insects and reptiles stuck in amber). Tickets to this, one of the country’s most visited museums, are really inexpensive, so we think it’s worth a visit.

There is also a virtual tour of the museum, which you can take any time of day from anywhere in the world.

Lithuanian Maritime museum

Located right on the seashore, this is the country’s most visited museum in 2024. The museum’s website even says “The museum where Lithuania has been”. And there’s a reason why so many visitors come here every year. The museum building itself is of historical significance – the renovated Nerija Fort, also known as Kopgalis Fortress. It houses the following exhibitions: aquariums with local and tropical fish, marine nature – with endangered fish species and a collection of shells, a maritime history exhibition with the largest collection of anchors in Lithuania, and much more. Thanks to the size of the museum, you can spend up to a whole day here. The museum also owns the ship Suduvis, which can also be visited in bad weather.

Ship M52 Suduvis – museum

A little further away from the Lithuanian Maritime Museum, in Klaipeda, on the Royal Embankment of the Danube River, you will find a ship 50 metres long and almost 10 metres wide. Just three years out of service with the Lithuanian Navy, this ship has been converted into a museum, where you can visit to see its exhibits and what it looks like inside. It also hosts a very interesting educational activity – the SOS Escape Room, based on real-life situations.

Memel Nord – Coastal Artillery Battery

In the village of Kukuliskes, on the Baltic Sea coast, you can visit the defensive fortifications built 70 years ago, during the German rule. These World War II fortifications are the only ones of their kind in Lithuania. Translated into Lithuanian, their name means Klaipeda – North. The bunker is open to the public and inside you will find bomb fragments, grenades and an exhibition of the personal belongings of the soldiers who lived there. A guide will tell you about the history of this place in an interesting and engaging way. During the tour, you will complete interesting tasks that are suitable for children. The site is only open on Saturdays and Sundays and the entrance fee is very low. We recommend a visit!

Kretinga Winter Garden

A little further from the seaside itself, a good 20-minute drive away, is another fun place for family leisure. You can visit it not only in bad weather, but also on a seaside holiday during the cold season. The Kretinga Winter Garden is a conservatory established in the Kretinga Manor almost a century and a half ago. In 2009, the 693.16 square metre conservatory, with more than 170 species and around 5,000 plants, was opened to visitors. Here you will find rare plants from all corners of the world. Fish and turtles swim in the garden’s pool. A great place for a nature walk amongst a wide variety of flora in all weathers and seasons. Upside down house in Palanga

If you’re staying in Palanga instead of Klaipeda, you can also visit one of the few upside-down houses in Lithuania when the weather is bad. This house, which will make you ponder the laws of physics, is located in a very convenient location – at the beginning of Basanavicius Street, so you won’t have to travel far to get there. If you want to take a walk on the ceiling and take some fun family photos, come and visit this new upside-down house in Palanga, which just opened a month ago.
