Halloween is celebrated in Tenerife, but did you know that this holiday in the Canaries also has quite old traditions? Many of us have probably seen the movie COCO, about a twelve-year-old boy named Miguel who accidentally enters the underground world. The creation of the film was inspired by the Day of the Dead, which is celebrated in Mexico, and the Canary Islands have a lot of Latin American traditions and culture. Now this holiday is more adapted to modern people and more commercialized.
Halloween events in Tenerife – there are many, both free and paid, and they take place on the last weekend of October. And the store shelves are already filling up with costumes and attributes. For your convenience, a complete list of Halloween events and where to buy Halloween costumes in Tenerife.
A Halloween story in the Canary Islands
So a bit of history and tradition: how was Día de Finados (or Finaos, meaning “dead man”) celebrated in the Canary Islands? Earlier on the eve of this day, which is October 31st, friends and family members would gather to tell stories (and certainly not necessarily sad ones) about loved ones who have died. This continued until the night, they ate typical fruits of the time: chestnuts, walnuts, country apples and sweets; drinking such food with aniseed or honey rum (depending on the area). Nowadays, in rural areas, Finadas are still celebrated with the playing of guitars, accompanied by drinks and abundant food.
Some towns in the north of Tenerife, such as San Juan de la Rambla or La Guancha, celebrate a ritual called “Los Santitos” (the little saints). November 1 in the morning, children visit the neighborhood with a basket in hand and knock on doors to get almonds, walnuts, dried figs or chestnuts. Today, these treats are mostly replaced by sweets.
So we definitely find similarities with the now popular Halloween, so the locals really celebrate and have fun and the kids go to school on that day in their scariest costumes.
